Chennai, July 18 (IANS) The Tambaram City Municipal Corporation (TCMC) has commenced the first phase of the Census of India 2027, opening the online self‑enumeration process and preparing for an extensive door‑to‑door house‑listing survey that will begin on August 1.
Residents can complete the self‑enumeration process through the official Census portal between July 17 and July 31 using a mobile phone, tablet or computer. The online facility enables households to submit their details in advance, reducing the time required for field verification and improving the accuracy of data collection.
Tambaram Corporation Commissioner and Principal Census Officer S. Balachander said every household that completes the online process will receive an 11‑digit Self Enumeration (SE) ID through SMS or email. Residents have been advised to retain this unique identification number and present it to census officials during their visit.
The corporation has deployed 1,483 enumerators and 243 supervisors to carry out the first phase of the census across all areas under its jurisdiction. Field staff will conduct house‑to‑house visits from August 1 to August 30, covering every residential and commercial building within the corporation limits.
To ensure systematic and comprehensive coverage, the civic body has created 1,483 house‑listing blocks, each consisting of approximately 150 to 200 households. During the visits, enumerators will verify information submitted through the self‑enumeration portal and collect details from households that have not completed the online registration.
Officials said the house‑listing exercise is an essential component of the Census of India 2027, as it establishes the database of buildings and households that will be used for the subsequent population census.
Commissioner Balachander appealed to residents to extend full cooperation to the enumerators and provide accurate information. He warned that furnishing false information, obstructing census officials in the discharge of their duties, or tampering with census markings made on buildings during the survey are offences punishable under the provisions of the Census Act.
Residents have also been advised to keep basic household information readily available to facilitate a smooth verification process when officials visit their homes.
The second phase of the Census of India 2027, comprising the population enumeration, is scheduled to be conducted in February 2027 following the completion of the nationwide house‑listing and housing census exercise.
