Pak forces kill one civilian, forcibly disappear three others in Balochistan
![]()
Quetta, June 30 (IANS) As violence against civilians continues unabated across Balochistan, leading human rights organisations on Tuesday brought to light the extrajudicial killing of one civilian and the enforced disappearance of three others allegedly at the hands of Pakistani forces.
Human rights body Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) revealed the dead body of 15-year-old student Saif Jan was dumped in the Airport Road area in the Panjgur district on Monday, after he had remained missing for nearly three months.
According to the BYC, Safi Jan was extrajudicially killed by Pakistan-backed death squads following his enforced disappearance.
Condemning the incident, the BYC said, “When the state sentences BYC leaders to life imprisonment without proving any crime, why does it never take action against those responsible for these killings?”
The rights body called on international human rights organisations and the global community to take urgent action, stressing that the people of Balochistan continue to face severe oppression and that their voices must not be ignored.
Highlighting the atrocities against civilians in Balochistan, human rights body Baloch Voice for Justice (BVJ) on Tuesday alleged that three young Baloch youths were forcibly disappeared by Pakistani forces.
The victims were identified as 22-year-old Hammal Khan, 20-year-old Azizullah, and 23-year-old Saddique.
Expressing grave concern, the BVJ said, “Their families continue to endure uncertainty, anguish, and the denial of justice while the authorities fail to disclose their whereabouts or ensure accountability. Enforced disappearance is a grave violation of fundamental human rights and reflects a continuing pattern of impunity that demands urgent international attention."
Earlier on Sunday, Paank, the Baloch National Movement's Human Rights Department, strongly condemned the enforced disappearance of elderly Baloch farmer Abdullah Mussa by Pakistani forces on June 28 at a military checkpoint in Gwadar district.
“The detention of an elderly civilian is deeply condemnable and raises serious human rights concerns. We demand the immediate disclosure of his whereabouts and his safe release,” the rights body stated.
Balochistan continues to reel under relentless atrocities by the Pakistani forces, marked by enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings of Baloch civilians at an unprecedented level.

Israel and India continue to expand cooperation across key sectors: Israeli Ambassador
![]()
New Delhi, June 30 (IANS) Israeli Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, on Tuesday urged the international community not to surrender to terrorism. He was speaking ahead of the 50th anniversary of ‘Operation Entebbe’, the Israeli counter-terrorist mission in Uganda.
"We see that there is a constant attempt to abuse international norms and to harm the innocent in order to achieve, in a deceitful and malign way, political goals... And, I think it's a goal, both of India, Israel and the rest of the international community, not to surrender to terrorism," Ambassador Azar told IANS in an interview.
"We've been, in the last few years, in one of our harshest and longest wars in our history. This started all with a terrorist attack, a barbaric attack on October 7 and we had to make sure that this cannot happen again. That's why we initiated the campaign that was pretty comprehensive,” he added.
The Israeli Ambassador stressed that "Entebbe gave us the inspiration that we need to prove the world that terrorism can be defeated. I think that the lessons of Entebbe are being learned around the world up until today."
He noted that India and Israel continue to expand cooperation, having signed many agreements during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the country earlier this year. Now, he stated, the agreements are being implemented.
Azar mentioned that retired Major General Amir Baram, Director General of the Israeli Ministry of Defence, visited India last week and advanced "very important" programmes related to upgrading mutual defence capabilities.
“I'm confident that as we continue working together, the solutions and the added value of that will be serving both Indian people and Israelis,” the Ambassador said.
Earlier, the Israeli Ambassador attended the '50 Years of the Entebbe Operation' event held at the United Service Institution of India in New Delhi

1st T20I: Shreyas keeps cards close on Sooryavanshi debut, says India ‘depressed’ after Ireland loss
![]()
Durham, June 30 (IANS) India captain Shreyas Iyer refused to reveal whether teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will make his international debut in the opening T20I against England at Durham on Wednesday, but backed the 15-year-old to shine whenever his opportunity comes.
Speaking before the first T20I at Chester-le-Street, Shreyas mentioned that India were keeping their team combination under wraps.
"You never know what is going to happen," he said in the pre-match press conference on Tuesday. "Our hands are tied right now in terms of what we will do. This is private. It’s something we discuss within the team. We can't reveal our combination to the opponents."
"Everyone on the team has performed. It's not just one person. We need to build confidence and provide chances for each player so that everyone feels good going into the tournaments. The players who helped India win the T20 World Cup understand the format; they have been essential. So, it's important to support them."
The captain praised the young player, saying, "Definitely, he is a brilliant talent. When he gets a chance to play, he will certainly excel."
Shreyas also spoke about India’s disappointing 2-0 T20I series defeat to the Ireland cricket team. He admitted the result was hard to accept, though he stopped short of calling it embarrassing.
"It wasn't embarrassing, but it was tough for us since we didn't expect Ireland to perform that well," Shreyas said. "They outplayed us in every aspect. They had good strategies regarding the ground dimensions, and we fell short in analysing and preparing for the field and how the wicket would play. So, credit to them, but we learned a lot from that series."
The captain feels the five-match series in England offers a new challenge and that India is better prepared this time. "This is a fresh chapter for us. A few of us have played in England before, and we understand the conditions and dimensions here. We are looking forward to an intense and challenging series."
He dismissed the idea that the struggles in Belfast would linger in the team.
"No, those issues are behind us," he said. "As I mentioned earlier, a few of us have experience playing in England, we know how the wickets typically behave, and we watch the matches on TV. In Belfast, we played after many years. It’s not an excuse, but I’m saying that adjusting to the wicket and the conditions was a bit of a challenge for us."
Describing the differences between the two venues, Shreyas noted that Belfast’s unique layout made it hard for India to adapt.
"I think it’s very different because the Belfast ground wasn’t a proper stadium. The outfield wasn’t even, and the dimensions were a bit square. It made it tricky to take singles and doubles, especially when fielding. As a captain, setting the field felt odd because we were not used to it."
"Here, the ground is flat, and the atmosphere is electrifying; the crowd will be intense. We have played in such conditions before."
Despite only scoring modest runs in Ireland, Shreyas is not concerned about his batting form. "Not at all," he responded when asked if captaincy had added pressure. "I am timing the ball well in the nets. Even in the last game, I felt my timing was great; a couple of odd balls just bounced differently. That doesn’t represent my batting or the pressure I feel."
"I trust my instincts. I know how well I perform under pressure. So, I just want to keep that faith in myself and move forward in the upcoming matches."
Shreyas also dismissed suggestions that England might struggle after switching from Test cricket to T20 following their recent series against New Zealand.
"I don't know what the atmosphere is like in the England team," he said. "But the shift from Test matches to a white ball is something most players have experienced. It’s not new for them. I’m sure they will manage just fine."

Jamshedpur nightclub murder: SHO among four policemen suspended, pub sealed
![]()
Jamshedpur, June 30 (IANS) Four Jharkhand Police personnel, including the Station House Officer (SHO) of Bistupur police station, were suspended on Tuesday following the sensational murder of Karni Sena youth leader Himanshu Singh outside the Double Down (DD) Pub and Bar in Jamshedpur, officials said.
The district administration has also sealed the nightclub.
The action comes in the wake of widespread public outrage and sharp criticism from opposition leaders, who have called the entire episode a glaring failure of law and order in Jharkhand.
Senior Superintendent of Police Kishore Kaushal suspended Bistupur SHO Dubey with immediate effect. Police Inspector Niranjan Kumar has been appointed in his place.
Earlier, two Assistant Sub-Inspectors and a constable posted on a PCR van had also been placed under suspension for alleged dereliction of duty.
Acting on the directions of Deputy Commissioner Rajiv Ranjan, authorities sealed the Double Down Pub and Bar and ordered a detailed probe into its licence, security arrangements, CCTV surveillance system, staff conduct and compliance with excise and safety regulations.
Police have registered an FIR against 10-11 persons, including the bar operator and BJP leader Neeraj Singh. Three accused, including Sonu Ram Sardar and Raj Lohar, have been arrested so far, while raids are underway to apprehend the remaining suspects.
Additional Director General, Law and Order, Manoj Kaushik visited Jamshedpur on Tuesday to review the investigation and directed officials to expedite the probe.
According to police, the incident started with an altercation inside the pub late on the night of June 27. Singh and his friend Pratyush Anand allegedly objected to the harassment of some women by a group of youths inside the pub. The confrontation escalated and spilled outside the pub premises.
Investigators say that when a PCR van reached the spot, Singh and Anand sought refuge inside the police vehicle. However, the attackers allegedly dragged them out in full view of police personnel and brutally assaulted them with sharp-edged weapons, including knives and cleavers.
The attack, captured on CCTV cameras, has triggered outrage across the city, questioning the police response.
Both victims were rushed to Tata Main Hospital (TMH) with critical injuries. Singh succumbed during treatment on Monday, while Anand remains under medical care.
News of Singh's death sparked massive protests in Jamshedpur on Monday evening. Karni Sena activists and local residents staged a blockade at the Bistupur roundabout for nearly six hours, demanding justice and accountability.
During the agitation, the official vehicle of City SP Lalit Meena was attacked and its windowpanes damaged.

PM Modi meets top Secretaries to discuss next-generation reforms, ease of doing business and living (Lead)
![]()
New Delhi, June 30 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting with Secretaries of all Central government ministries and departments at the Seva Teerth on Tuesday, with a focus on a comprehensive discussion on the reform agenda, as the government pushes for next-generation administrative and economic reforms.
This was one of the first full-Secretary-level interactions with the PM in the current fiscal (FY27), seen as a signal to align the bureaucracy with key policy priorities for the second half of 2026.
At the meeting also attended by the Cabinet Secretary and the two Principal Secretaries to the PM, P.K. Mishra and Shaktikanta Das, two main themes were discussed.
The first was "deregulation and other reforms", which aim to make "doing business easier" and also make living easier for people.
The second theme was promoting "Aatmanirbharta" and making India self-reliant.
During the interaction, the Secretaries briefed the Prime Minister on the major steps being taken by their Ministries and Departments in line with the two key themes, and the ongoing efforts to translate the Prime Minister's vision into actionable outcomes.
They also acquainted him with sector-specific challenges while outlining their future strategies to enhance governance and service delivery.
In his remarks on the occasion, the Prime Minister impressed on them the need to foster teamwork to adopt a whole-of-government approach and break departmental silos.
Highlighting the importance of integrated planning, decision-making, and coordination, he encouraged the wider utilisation of the PM GatiShakti as an effective platform for this purpose.
Prime Minister Modi also told the Secretaries to focus on real results and the requirement to see the tangible impact of government schemes, intended to improve the lives of common people.
He motivated the officers to work hard to ensure quick and visible benefits for citizens. S
The meeting marked the Prime Minister’s second comprehensive interaction with the country’s top civil servants.
It assumes added significance as the Centre has recently launched the ambitious “52 Reforms in 52 Weeks” initiative across several ministries, including Railways, with clearly defined implementation timelines. Prime Minister Modi has consistently emphasised the importance of achieving measurable outcomes within stipulated deadlines, making periodic reviews a crucial component of the government’s governance.
The PM-chaired review sought to provide an opportunity for ministries to assess progress, address implementation challenges, and strengthen coordination to accelerate reforms that improve public service delivery, reduce regulatory burdens, and enhance the ease of doing business for industries, as well as the ease of living for citizens.

Bihar: Tejashwi Yadav targets govt over inflation, BJP hits back
![]()
Patna, June 30 (IANS) The political confrontation between the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition in Bihar intensified on Tuesday after Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav criticised the Samrat Choudhary government over rising prices of essential commodities.
The remarks prompted a sharp response from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president Sanjay Saraogi, who countered by targeting former Chief Minister Rabri Devi.
In a social media post, Tejashwi Yadav claimed that the rising prices of tomatoes, onions, potatoes, and other essential food items have placed a heavy burden on ordinary households.
He alleged that after increases in the prices of petrol, diesel, and LPG, consumers are now struggling with the rising cost of daily necessities, including pulses, flour, vegetables, and edible oil.
The RJD leader also accused the NDA government of failing to control inflation and alleged that hoarding, black marketing, unemployment, poverty, and corruption have worsened the public's economic situation.
Tejashwi further criticised the BJP-led alliance, accusing it of pursuing policies that, he said, have adversely affected common citizens.
Responding to Tejashwi Yadav's criticism of Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, BJP state president Sanjay Saraogi launched a counterattack directed at Rabri Devi. Saraogi said that the day Rabri Devi took the oath as Bihar's Chief Minister was, in his view, a black day for the state.
He urged Tejashwi Yadav to remember that period before making remarks about the current government.
On Monday, Tejashwi Yadav referred to CM Samrat Choudhary as a selected Chief Minister and had earlier used the phrase "Cheap Minister" while criticising him.
The BJP has condemned those remarks, while the RJD has continued to question the government's handling of issues such as inflation, governance, and unemployment.
The latest exchange highlights the increasingly confrontational political atmosphere in Bihar, with both the ruling alliance and the opposition sharpening their attacks ahead of future political contests.
The allegations and counter-allegations exchanged by both sides are political statements.

Drug-free K’taka: Shivakumar urges parents not to hide children’s addiction
![]()
Bengaluru, June 30 (IANS) Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Tuesday declared that the state government's goal is to make state drug-free by 2028 and called upon citizens, students and youth to join hands with the government in eliminating the narcotics menace.
He was speaking after inaugurating the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking-2026 programme organised by the Karnataka Police at the Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bengaluru.
"Our goal is to build a drug-free and addiction-free Karnataka by 2028. We have taken a pledge towards achieving this objective. If the public, youth and students join hands with the government, we can eradicate this illegal trade," the Chief Minister said.
He said the government's message was "Quit drugs, choose happiness" and urged young people to adopt positive values and resist pressure to consume narcotics.
"Parents should not hide their children's drug addiction fearing loss of social reputation. The longer such problems are concealed, the greater the damage to the child's future. Counsel your children and cooperate with the police so that the source of the drugs can be identified. This will help protect many more young people. I have instructed the police department to ensure that the identities of such children are kept confidential," he said.
Announcing a new incentive, Shivakumar said the government had decided to reward members of the public who provide credible information about drug consumption and trafficking.
"Parents and members of the public who provide confidential information about drug abuse will be rewarded by the police department. This will help us dismantle the supply network. The fight against drugs will protect families, communities and the state while contributing to the nation's progress," he said.
"We must create our own ideals. The pledge we have taken today should become a lifelong commitment. We should also spread awareness in our surroundings. Many may try to influence or pressure young people, but students and youth should not succumb to such pressure. They must remain physically and mentally strong and not lose emotional balance," he said.
Highlighting the government's enforcement efforts, Shivakumar said narcotic substances worth Rs 89 crore had been destroyed over the past three years under the leadership of former Home Minister G. Parameshwara.
"I congratulate all senior police officers, constables and personnel who have worked to dismantle these drug networks. Their contribution is commendable," he said.
The Chief Minister urged parents not to conceal cases of substance abuse involving their children out of fear of social stigma.
Shivakumar said a drug-free Karnataka was not merely a government slogan but a collective commitment of every Kannadiga.
"We are all born as human beings. Dying without achievement is an insult to death, and living without ideals is an insult to life. We must move forward with values and determination. We have all taken a pledge to eradicate the menace of drugs from society. I congratulate the students, parents and educational institutions that have joined this movement," he said.
Expressing concern over emerging trends, Shivakumar said the police had informed the government that intoxicating substances were being mixed with products such as pan masala and gutka, and that drugs were increasingly being supplied to consumers through home delivery arranged over the phone.
"I have made it clear that strict action will be taken against anyone found mixing narcotic substances with pan masala or gutka. Home Minister Priyank Kharge is leading the department efficiently and taking firm action against the drug menace," he said.
Referring to a World Health Organization report, the Chief Minister said nearly 13 to 14 lakh people die every year in India due to tobacco consumption.
"Our country's culture, language and diversity are admired across the world. Drug abuse and addiction should never become our identity," he added.
Shivakumar said the Student Policing system had already been introduced in schools and colleges to create awareness among young people. He noted that a dedicated task force had also been constituted earlier under the leadership of the then Home Minister to curb drug abuse and other illegal activities.
"People must work with the police to eliminate drug abuse and other unlawful activities. This should become our foremost responsibility," he said.
Appealing directly to students, the Chief Minister said they could play an important role in helping friends overcome addiction.
"You can help transform the lives of your friends who have fallen victim to substance abuse. As students, you are also responsible citizens of the country. The entire world looks to Bengaluru. Every year, Karnataka produces nearly 19,940 doctors, over one lakh nurses and thousands of engineers. Ours is a state with exceptional human resources, and we must protect our youth from the threat of drugs," he said.
He also urged people to trust the police, describing the force as an extension of every family.
"The police are working for the welfare of society and the state. They are not against families but are committed to protecting them. All elected representatives must join hands in building a drug-free Karnataka," he said.

China’s balancing act during West Asia crisis strains ties with Gulf nations: Report
![]()
Naypyidaw, June 30 (IANS) Several Gulf nations have quietly voiced frustration with China's response to the security crisis in West Asia. During recent escalations, Beijing has consistently advocated restraint, dialogue and de-escalation, reflecting its longstanding diplomatic posture.
However, for countries that have experienced missile attacks, drone strikes and direct security threats linked to Iran and its network of partners, such calls for restraint are not viewed as neutral. Rather, questions arose about whether China is prepared to publicly identify the source of those threats, a report has stated.
"For much of the last decade, China appeared to have achieved what few external powers in the Middle East had managed: the simultaneous cultivation of deep partnerships with rival regional actors. Beijing expanded economic ties across the Gulf, became the largest trading partner of several Arab states, deepened its strategic relationship with Iran, and crowned its diplomatic ambitions by facilitating the Saudi-Iran rapprochement in 2023. This ability to engage all sides while avoiding regional entanglements came to be viewed as a defining feature of China’s approach to West Asia,” a report in Myanmar media outlet Mizzima News detailed.
“Yet the very crisis that should have showcased the benefits of China’s balanced diplomacy has instead exposed its limitations. The recent escalation involving Iran, Israel and several Arab states has highlighted a dilemma that has long been embedded within Beijing’s regional strategy. While economic partnerships can be pursued simultaneously with competing actors, security crises inevitably force governments to reveal their priorities,” it added.
According to the report, China faces the challenge of balancing its desire to maintain productive relations with both Tehran and the Arab Gulf states as expectations of its role grow alongside its expanding regional influence.
It noted that the growing strain between China and Gulf nations has been particularly apparent in multilateral forums. China's reluctance to endorse initiatives directly criticising Iranian actions, the report said, has strengthened the perception among some Gulf policymakers that Beijing's carefully maintained diplomatic balance begins to tilt whenever Tehran is involved.
Whether or not this perception is entirely justified is ultimately less significant than the fact that it is gaining traction among regional policymakers whose trust Beijing has spent years cultivating.
"The postponement of the China-Arab States Summit should therefore be viewed within this broader context. Although regional instability provides a perfectly plausible explanation, the episode has also encouraged discussion within diplomatic circles about whether expectations on both sides of the relationship are beginning to diverge. Arab states increasingly expect a major power with expanding regional interests to assume greater political responsibility, while China continues to prefer the role of an economic partner insulated from regional security disputes," the report stated.

NCP(SP) was prepared to hand over leadership of party to Ajit Pawar following merger: Shashikant Shinde
![]()
Mumbai, Feb 13 (IANS) Maharashtra NCP(SP) President Shashikant Shinde has written a commemorative editorial in the party’s magazine, shedding light on the hidden dynamics of the split and the alleged merger plans between the two NCP factions.
Shinde claimed that late Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar was forced to exit the original NCP due to threats and conspiracies orchestrated by "invisible powers."
He further said that a final decision to merge the two parties was reached in the presence of Maratha strongman Sharad Pawar and was to be announced on February 12.
In a massive revelation, Shinde asserted that Sharad Pawar and other senior leaders had agreed to hand over the entire command of the unified party to Ajit Pawar following the merger.
“Fulfilling this merger and rebuilding the party with strength would be the only true tribute to Ajit Dada," Shinde wrote.
Shinde clarified, "It was our decision to hand over all party responsibilities to Ajit Dada once the merger process was complete. However, fate had other plans. We were all mentally prepared to accept Ajit Dada’s leadership.”
Shinde appealed to the party faithful, asserting that a merger is the only true tribute to the late leader. He noted, “Ajit Pawar’s dream remains unfulfilled, and it is now the party's responsibility to complete it. Unity: Reuniting and strengthening the NCP is the ultimate goal. Leaders and workers must set aside their differences and broaden their perspective to achieve this unity.”
Following the publication of the article, senior NCP(SP) leader and former Home Minister Anil Deshmukh remarked, "I am unaware of what our State President has said. Since he wrote the article, he likely has more information than I do. I personally have no knowledge of this matter."
While Sharad Pawar has avoided commenting publicly on the matter, Shinde’s article has brought these behind-the-scenes developments to light. However, Shinde’s revelations have sparked a new controversy and the NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) has reacted with sharp skepticism.
Party spokesperson Suraj Chavan questioned the timing of these claims. Chavan alleged that discussing a merger while the leader’s mortal remains were still at Vidya Pratishthan suggests a "lust for power" rather than genuine respect. He clarified that Sunetra Pawar is now the ultimate authority of their party and any dialogue must happen through her.
Further, the party legislator Amol Mitkari stated that no such merger discussions have occurred within their internal party meetings, attributing the rumours to the rival camp's leaders.
While the Pawar family continues to demonstrate a unique balance of political rivalry and familial bond — recently seen at family weddings — the political future remains clouded.
All eyes are now on Sunetra Pawar. Whether she will pursue the "unfulfilled dream" of a unified NCP or maintain a separate identity, remains a question that will define the next chapter of Maharashtra politics.

India’s electronics exports outpace global growth: NITI Aayog report
![]()
New Delhi, Feb 13 (IANS) India’s share in global electronics demand has expanded at a rapid compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17.2 per cent, significantly outpacing global growth of 4.4 per cent between 2015 and 2024, driven primarily by the sharp rise in mobile phone exports, according to NITI Aayog's Trade Watch Quarterly report for July-September 2025-26, launched on Friday.
Between 2016 and 2024, electronics exports increased nearly five-fold, reaching USD 42.1 billion. With global electronics trade valued at USD 4.6 trillion, the sector represents one of the largest and fastest-evolving segments of the world economy. India has demonstrated particular strength in products such as mobile phones, consumer electronics, and communication equipment, with exports increasingly directed towards major final-consumption markets including the United States, the United Kingdom, and the UAE, the report states.
Electronics, the thematic focus of this quarter's edition, has emerged as a cornerstone of India's manufacturing and export transformation. Now the second-largest item in India's export basket, the sector is both technology-led and deeply interconnected with industries such as automotive, renewable energy, telecom, defence, and digital services, making it a powerful multiplier for industrial growth.
The report states that having established a strong foothold in assembly and system integration, India is now entering the next phase of its electronics journey, moving decisively toward component manufacturing and higher value addition. This transition is supported by targeted policy measures, including the Union Budget's Rs 40,000 crore allocation under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme, aimed at strengthening domestic capabilities.
The analysis underscores that sustained competitiveness will be driven by deeper integration into global electronics value chains, encompassing printed circuit board design, semiconductor assembly and testing, power electronics, and embedded systems. Complemented by continued improvements in logistics efficiency, tariff rationalisation, and industry-aligned skill development, these shifts position electronics as a key engine of India's export growth and technological advancement in the coming decade.
NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Suman Bery said, "Electronics, as the organising core of modern manufacturing value chains, with semiconductors and components, plays a key role in determining trade balances and technological sovereignty. While India has achieved scale in final assembly, sustained competitiveness will depend on correcting structural cost disabilities, deepening domestic component ecosystems, and leveraging anchor investments in components to embed Indian firms more firmly within global production networks."
The publication also provides a comprehensive assessment of global and domestic trade trends at a time when global trade growth has moderated but remains positive, with services continuing to outperform goods and developing regions emerging as key drivers.
The analysis highlights that India's trade performance in Q2 FY26 was driven by export-led momentum sustaining the overall trade expansion amid heightened global uncertainty. Services and merchandise exports recorded robust growth of around 8.5 per cent, outpacing import growth in both merchandise and services.
At a structural level, the edition underscores the deepening of trade among developing economies, which has expanded nearly four-fold since 2005 and now accounts for a rising share of global exports, with India’s trade trajectory increasingly aligned with this Global South rebalancing through regional value chains and new trade corridors.
Further, this edition highlights the growing role of e-commerce as a key enabler of future export growth. India is now among the world’s top six e-commerce markets, with electronics accounting for nearly half of online retail.

Centre okays 25 lakh metric tonnes wheat exports, 5 LMT of sugar exports
![]()
New Delhi, Feb 13 (IANS) In a farmer-centric step to stabilise domestic markets and ensure remunerative returns to producers, the Centre on Friday approved the export of 25 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of wheat, along with an additional 5 LMT of wheat products.
According to a Consumer Affairs Ministry statement, wheat stock availability with private entities during 2025–26 stands at approximately 75 LMT, which is nearly 32 LMT higher compared to the corresponding period last year.
"This substantial year-on-year increase indicates a comfortable supply position in the country. Furthermore, as on April 1, 2026, total wheat availability in the central pool with FCI is projected at around 182 LMT, thus ensuring that export permissions will not impact domestic food security requirements," it said.
Moreover, wheat acreage in Rabi 2026 has also increased to about 334.17 lakh hectares compared to 328.04 lakh hectares last year.
This reflects strong farmer confidence in wheat cultivation supported by assured MSP and procurement mechanisms, and signals the likelihood of another robust harvest, the official statement further added.
The decision to permit export of 25 LMT of wheat and 5 LMT wheat products will help stabilise domestic prices, improve market liquidity, ensure efficient stock rotation, and further strengthen farmers’ income while ensuring national food security.
Meanwhile, to facilitate sugar exports, the government decided to allow export of an additional 5 LMT of sugar to willing sugar mills during the current Sugar Season 2025–26.
Earlier, the government had permitted the export of 15 LMT of sugar during the current Sugar Season 2025–26. This decision is expected to facilitate higher sugar exports and help in managing surplus sugar availability in the country.
As per data, only about 1.97 LMT of sugar has been exported up to January 31, 2026.
In addition, approximately 2.72 LMT of sugar has been contracted for export by sugar mills to date.
The ministry said that the additional export quantity of 5 LMT shall be made available to willing sugar mills, subject to the condition that at least 70 per cent of their allocated quantity is exported by June 30, 2026.

The digital initiatives launched include Aarogya Setu 2.0, Ayushman App, Ayushman Sarathi WhatsApp Chatbot, National Health Claims Exchange (NHCX), Insurance Plan FHIR Object Creator, e-Sushrut Clinic, Unified Health Interface (UHI), Drug Registry, Common LOINC Codes for India (CLCI) and Bharat Health Terminology Service (BHTS).
Those who attended the event included Prataprao Jadhav, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of AYUSH; Anupriya Patel, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare; and Dr. M. Jadhav described the initiative as a significant step towards strengthening India's digital health ecosystem.
He highlighted that, under the leadership of PM Modi, the government has adopted a whole-of-government approach to integrate the AYUSH system with modern healthcare, creating a more holistic, patient-centric healthcare framework.
Anupriya Patel highlighted that digital health records will enable women to seamlessly access their medical information wherever they go, ensuring continuity of care.
She further stated that the initiative would also ease the administrative burden on frontline health workers, including ASHA and Anganwadi workers, thereby improving service delivery.
Nadda also launched the e-Sushrut@Clinic, a lightweight Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) developed by C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advanced Computing), to address these challenges by providing a simple, affordable, and user-friendly digital solution tailored for small outpatient clinics.
It is proposed to open this HMIS for government PHCs, HWCs, Subcenters and private clinics. Currently, 800-plus health facilities are onboarded on eSushrut@Clinic, generating over 680 health records.
C-DAC is also implementing the eSushrut software, which is being installed at more than 15 AIIMS and in various State government hospitals. The National Health Authority (NHA), as part of its role in increasing the adoption of Digital Health and ABDM, is signing an MoU with C-DAC.
The cost of eSushrut@clinic is estimated at Rs 499/month for 5 users. Under the NHA MoU, a discount of Rs 200 will be given, bringing the effective rate to Rs 299/month. The software will be offered at no cost for the initial 3 months. Each additional user beyond the included 5-user limit will be charged at Rs 50 per user.

Kerala: IMA demands minimum Rs 80,000 monthly salary for junior doctors
![]()
Kochi, June 27 (IANS) The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Kerala State Branch, has urged the Kerala government to immediately revise the salary structure of junior doctors, describing the remuneration currently offered to young medical professionals as grossly inadequate and warning that poor pay could accelerate the exodus of doctors from the state.
The demand follows a recent notification issued by the Government Medical College, Thrissur, inviting applications for the post of Casualty Medical Officer (CMO), in which MBBS-qualified doctors were offered a monthly salary of just Rs 42,000.
The IMA has demanded that the minimum monthly remuneration for junior doctors be raised to Rs 80,000.
Describing the existing pay structure as inconsistent with the responsibilities entrusted to doctors, the association noted that young medical professionals undergo more than 5.5 years of rigorous medical education and compulsory training before entering one of the country's most demanding professions.
Despite being responsible for life-saving decisions in emergency departments and bearing significant medico-legal responsibilities, they are paid far less than many other government employees with substantially lower professional qualifications, it said.
The IMA cited the example of a Security Officer post at a Kerala university, which requires only a B.Sc. qualification but carries a starting salary of Rs 55,200 to Rs 1.15 lakh per month.
It clarified that the comparison was not intended to question the remuneration of other government employees, but to highlight the disparity in the compensation paid to doctors entrusted with safeguarding human lives.
Calling junior doctors the backbone of government hospitals, the association said they shoulder the bulk of patient care in casualty departments, intensive care units, medical and surgical wards and labour rooms, often working prolonged shifts under intense physical and emotional pressure.
The IMA warned that Kerala was already witnessing a steady migration of talented young doctors to other states and overseas in search of better salaries and working conditions.
Unless the government offers competitive remuneration at the entry level, the state would struggle to retain skilled medical professionals, ultimately affecting the quality of public healthcare, it said.
Urging the government to immediately review the salary fixed for Casualty Medical Officers and other junior doctors, IMA Kerala State President M.N. Menon and State Secretary Roy R. Chandran said ensuring fair remuneration was not merely a matter of professional dignity but essential for protecting Kerala's healthcare system and retaining its best medical talent.

Govt to hold apex health council meet on NHM, food and drug reforms
![]()
New Delhi, June 27 (IANS) The government will convene the 16th Conference of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare (CCHFW) on Monday to deliberate on key policy priorities, including the National Health Mission (NHM), food and drug reforms and allied health services, according to an official statement on Saturday.
The conference that will be held here will be chaired by Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda, along with Ministers of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel and Prataprao Jadhav, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) said.
According to the ministry, the meeting aims to strengthen centre-state collaboration in the health sector through discussions on policy priorities, review of ongoing programmes, and identification of emerging challenges.
The thematic sessions this year will focus on the National Health Mission and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)-linked priorities, food and drug reforms, and allied health services.
Moreover, the conference will provide a platform for states and union territories to share best practices and deliberate on a coordinated roadmap to improve health outcomes across the country.
Constituted under Article 263 of the Constitution, the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare is the apex advisory body of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
It reviews the implementation of policies and programmes related to medical and public health and recommends measures for their effective implementation in partnership with states and union territories.
The ministry said the conference serves as an important institutional mechanism for promoting cooperative federalism in the health sector by facilitating dialogue and policy consultations between the government and states on issues of national importance.
Apart from that, the MoHFW has proposed easing the residual shelf-life requirement for imported drugs by replacing the existing norm of more than 60 per cent remaining shelf life with a minimum shelf life of 12 months at the time of import on Friday.
