Some sections tarnishing ‘Sanatan Dharma’ by spreading hatred: Digvijaya Singh

Datia, Sep 11 (IANS) Senior Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh on Friday said that some sections were tarnishing Sanatan Dharma by spreading religious hatred and asserted that he opposed anyone using religion to create divisions in society.

“What is happening is that in this country, some sections are tarnishing Sanatan Dharma and spreading religious hatred. I do not want to name those organisations. They exist among Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians as well. I oppose anyone who spreads hatred in the name of religion,” Singh said at a press conference in Datia.

The veteran Congress leader made this statement while explaining the objective behind his proposed ‘Sanatan Swabhiman Yatra’ from Ujjain to Ayodhya. During his visit to Datia, Singh visited the Pitambara Peeth and offered prayers to Goddess Baglamukhi.

He also offered jalabhishek at Bankhandeshwar Mahadev temple and stood in a queue along with common devotees.

He later visited the residence and fort of newly elected Congress MLA Ghanshyam Singh, where he met party workers before addressing the media. Singh said the essence of Sanatan Dharma should be understood through the teachings of Adi Shankaracharya and saint-poet Kabir, and maintained that religion should not be used to spread hatred or hostility.

The Congress leader said true Sanatan teaches tolerance, compassion and harmony among all communities.

He had earlier announced that the ‘Sanatan Swabhiman Yatra’ would begin from Ujjain on October 20, coinciding with Vijayadashami, and proceed to Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, covering over 1,000 km. Singh has said the yatra is neither in support of nor against any political party and is aimed at protecting transparency, truth and devotees’ faith while promoting social harmony.

The Congress leader has invited people to register for participation in the proposed yatra from Ujjain to Ayodhya.
