Chandigarh, Sep 18 (IANS) BJP leader and former Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu on Friday alleged that his cavalcade was attacked near Batala in Punjab while he was on his way to Pathankot to participate in the launch of the party’s ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’.
Bittu claimed that a group of people surrounded his convoy, hurled eggs and tomatoes, and damaged the windows of escort vehicles.
He also alleged that some of those involved were carrying weapons. The incident reportedly took place on the Amritsar-Pathankot highway.
State BJP President Kewal Dhillon strongly condemned the attack on Bittu. “Even before the Nasha Mukt Yatra could begin, the Aam Aadmi Party has become rattled,” Dhillon wrote on X.
“Today, before the yatra commenced, AAP workers attacked the convoy of Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Union Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Singh Bittu. Eggs and tomatoes were thrown at the vehicles in his convoy, and the windows of the vehicles were smashed. I strongly condemn this attack,” he wrote.
At the same time, he warned Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and party national convener Arvind Kejriwal that the BJP’s soldiers will not be intimidated by such cowardly acts carried out by you and your drug mafia.
“We will take our fight against drugs to its logical conclusion. I also urge the Punjab DGP to take immediate action against those responsible. Instead of functioning like AAP volunteers, the Punjab Police should perform its role as a professional police force,” the BJP state chief added.
In a video, Bittu alleged that a group of more than 200 people surrounded and disrupted his cavalcade, pelting his vehicles with stones and eggs. He claimed that those involved were supporters of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and alleged that some police personnel were facilitating the confrontation.
He said such incidents are a grave threat to democracy and the safety of political leaders.
