Hyderabad: Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan on Thursday paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and those who fought for the integration of the erstwhile Hyderabad princely state with India, describing the episode as a significant chapter in the country’s nation-building journey.
Addressing the Hyderabad Liberation Day celebrations at Secunderabad Parade Ground, Radhakrishnan said Hyderabad’s integration on September 17, 1948, was part of the larger process of national unity that helped strengthen the foundations of modern India.
Radhakrishnan recalled Patel’s role in integrating the princely states and paid homage to the former deputy prime minister for his contribution to national unity.
Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said Patel’s firm resolve, the courage of the armed forces and the struggle of the people of Hyderabad contributed to the region’s integration with India.
Shekhawat also highlighted the contribution of soldiers of the Jodhpur Lancers during the period.
Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar recalled the suffering of people under the Nizam’s rule and the atrocities attributed to the Razakars. He said Patel’s intervention led to Hyderabad becoming part of India.
The celebrations featured a march past by 10 contingents of the Central Armed Police Forces. A special cultural performance titled “Hyderabad Vimochanam” presented the historical and cultural context of the liberation.
The Vice-President also felicitated winners of a Hyderabad Liberation Day quiz conducted at the Salar Jung Museum.
An exhibition organised by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting showcased historical episodes associated with Hyderabad Liberation Day and India’s journey towards national integration.
Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla, Union minister G. Kishan Reddy, Malkajgiri MP Etala Rajender and senior officials attended the event.
The celebrations also highlighted constitutional values of equality, dignity and opportunity and the importance of strengthening national unity through citizen participation.
