Monsoon session of Tripura Assembly from Thursday likely to witness heated debates

Agartala, Aug 26 (IANS) The monsoon session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly will begin on Thursday and is likely to witness heated discussions on various issues, including the death of state Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag, officials said.

Deputy Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly Ram Prasad Paul said that the three-day session would be held on August 27, 28 and 31. He said that a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC), held on August 21 in the presence of Assembly Speaker Ram Pada Jamatia and members from both the ruling and opposition parties, finalised the schedule of the Assembly session.

“During the BAC meeting, detailed discussions were held on various important issues, the agenda and the time schedule for the session to ensure its smooth, disciplined and productive conduct,” the Deputy Speaker said in a social media post.

He said that the session is highly significant in view of the overall development of Tripura, various issues concerning public interest and the future progress of the state. He expressed hope that through constructive discussions and views of the members, the session would become more effective and meaningful in the interests of the people of Tripura.

A senior official of the state Assembly said that Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, is likely to give a statement on the opening day of the Assembly session on Thursday over the death of DGP Anurag.

The body of Anurag, a 1994-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Tripura cadre, was found under mysterious circumstances in the washroom attached to his official chamber at the state police headquarters here on July 20.

Anurag took charge as Tripura’s DGP on May 17, 2025. Before assuming office as the state’s police chief, he had served as the Director General of Police (Intelligence) in Tripura.

Following the incident, the acting Director General of Police on July 24 constituted a three-member team, headed by West Tripura district Superintendent of Police (SP) Namit Pathak, to probe the “mysterious” death of the senior police officer. His tenure as Tripura Director General of Police was scheduled to continue until May 17, 2027.

SP Pathak later reconstituted the investigating team with 10 members under his leadership. Besides Additional Superintendent of Police, Urban, West Tripura, Dhruba Nath, Tripura Police Crime Branch Additional Superintendent of Police Souvik De, the Officers-in-Charge of Cyber Crime Police Station, Amtali Police Station, West Agartala Women Police Station, and the Battala and Ramnagar Outposts are the other members of the investigation team.

An Inspector of KTD Singh Police Training Academy and the previous Investigating Officer, Subhojit Deb, are also members of the reconstituted investigation team, an official order said.

The opposition Congress, CPI-M, CPI and several other political parties since July 20 have been demanding a judicial inquiry, monitored by a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court, to determine the circumstances and reasons behind the death of the state’s senior-most IPS officer.

The Left parties and the Congress had earlier organised separate protest rallies in Tripura, pressing for a High Court-monitored judicial investigation into the incident. His tenure as Tripura Director General of Police was scheduled to continue until May 17, 2027.
