‘Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?’ actor Aabhaas Mehta joins ‘Hastinapur Ke Veer’ as King Jarasandha

Mumbai, Aug 20 (IANS) TV actor Aabhaas Mehta, known for ‘Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?’, ‘Tu Sooraj Main Saanjh Piyaji’ and ‘Hum Rahein Na Rahein Hum’, has joined the cast of mythological series ‘Hastinapur Ke Veer’ as King Jarasandha.

Aabhaas said he was drawn more to the show than to the character initially.

“Yes I have just joined the show Hastinapur ke Veer and I am playing the character of King Jarasandha. What drew me to this character? I would be a liar if I say that I was drawn to the character because honestly I had zero idea about the story, about this character,” he said.

“But the show is what I kind of got attracted to because it’s mythology and it’s Mahabharat and I have never been a part of anything to do with Mahabharat. So I thought this is a good chance to join, you know, another epic tale and let’s see. I am hoping for the best.”

The actor, who has featured in several mythological shows before, said the genre gives performers a “larger than life” scope.

“I love being a part of mythological shows all through my career. Again, I have been a part of quite a lot. I started off with Devon Ke Dev…Mahadev, so that story was around. Then I went on to do Sinhasan Battisi; I played the character of Betal. So I got to be a part of another cult story from my childhood days of Betal, which was another very pleasant experience,” he recalled.

“Then I did Mahakali – Anth hi Aarambh hai, and that was the best experience in mythological show I have ever had. I played a super villain in that and it was very difficult to do that character because of the entire scenario with all the get up.”

“And then I did Lakshmi Narayan – Sukh Samarthya Santulan, so that’s the story of Lord Vishnu. And now I am a part of Mahabharat. So you know as you can see the entire journey has been a part of lot of mythologies,” he added.

Talking about the responsibility that comes with mythological roles, the actor said: “The one thing I love about mythological shows is that it gives you a much larger scope to perform because obviously these are myths…”

“It gives you a little scope to be larger than life, larger than reality. And obviously it comes with a lot of expectations on the audience because all these stories are told… They are written. There is literature. There is audio. There is visual. There is shows films cartoons everything,” he said.

“And so you got to be very honest with your writing in this so that you don’t sway from the game. And you have to make sure you don’t hurt anybody’s sentiments.”

For his role as Jarasandha, the actor said he has done his research.

“How I have prepared for this role is researched a lot about the king and as much as I could I have read about him. The new thing that I am bringing to this role is something I can’t share with you right now because it’s definitely a pleasant surprise. So I would say please watch the show you will get to see there.”

Mehta added: “One thing I’d like to say to my audience is that all through my career all these years they love me, they hated me, I can say so I hope they do the same and I sincerely hope that I do absolute justice to this character I am working hard for it so please do watch and show your love.”

The show, which premiered on June 2, 2026, explores the untold, formative childhood years, relationships, and rivalries of the Pandavas and Kauravas before the events of the great Mahabharata war. Hastinapur Ke Veer airs on Sony SAB.
