Indore: The Indore Metro network expanded its operational footprint on Saturday with the inauguration of Priority Corridor-2, marking a major step in the city’s urban transport infrastructure.
Union housing and urban affairs minister Manohar Lal, in the presence of Madhya Pradesh chief minister Mohan Yadav, inaugurated the corridor. Minister of state for housing and urban affairs Tokhan Sahu was also present.
The newly inaugurated Phase-I (Reach-II) covers around 11 km and 11 stations, connecting Super Corridor-3 with Malviya Nagar Chauraha. The corridor has been developed at an estimated cost of ₹2,850 crore.
With the addition of the new stretch, the Indore Metro network now has 16 operational stations spanning approximately 17 km, taking the cumulative project cost to around ₹4,370 crore.
Speaking at the inauguration, Manohar Lal said the expanded Metro network would offer commuters a faster, safer, more comfortable and reliable mode of public transport.
He said the Metro would strengthen connectivity between residential areas, commercial hubs and employment centres across the city.
“Metro Rail is not merely a transportation project but an important instrument for economic growth, urban transformation and social inclusion,” the minister said.
He also stressed the importance of increasing the use of public transport to tackle growing urban challenges. Greater reliance on Metro services, he said, would help reduce traffic congestion, fuel consumption and vehicular emissions.
Manohar Lal congratulated the Madhya Pradesh government and the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited, along with officials, engineers, workers and other stakeholders involved in executing the project.
The latest expansion is expected to further strengthen Indore’s public transport network and support the city’s long-term urban mobility requirements.
