Head Constable found hanging in defunct police outpost in Chhatarpur; probe underway

Chhatarpur, May 8 (IANS) A Head Constable was found hanging inside a defunct police outpost in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh on Friday morning, prompting senior officials to rush to the spot and initiate an investigation.

The incident was reported at Nowgon police station in Chhatarpur and it came to light early on Friday when locals alerted the police about a body hanging inside the abandoned outpost building.

Subsequently, police rushed to the spot and took control of the scene and sent the body for postmortem.

The police outpost where the incident occurred has been lying unused for some time, with a new police outpost functioning just across the road.

The deceased was later identified as Tarun Gandharak (35), a resident of Sagar district and currently posted at Nowgong police station.

The Head Constable was not on duty at the time and was found dressed in civilian clothes. A team from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) also visited the spot and collected evidence to assist in the investigation.

“Head Constable Tarun Gandharak may have been under stress. The outpost where he hanged himself is an old and defunct structure, while the new outpost is located just across from it and is currently in use,” Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP), Amit Meshram said.

He also stated that no suicide note was recovered from the scene, and investigators are trying to establish the sequence of events leading to the incident.

The SDOP said that further clarity on the cause of death and possible reasons behind the suspected suicide is expected after the post-mortem and forensic reports are received.

“Prima-facie it appears a suicide case, but we are investigating considering all possible angles. The autopsy report will make things clear and the investigation will proceed accordingly,” he added.
