Gujarat Police complete probe, file chargesheet within 21 days in rape case

Ahmedabad, Sep 3 (IANS) Ahmedabad City Police have filed a charge sheet within 21 days in the alleged rape case involving a security guard in the Anandnagar Police Station area, completing the investigation on the basis of forensic, circumstantial and technical evidence.

The case relates to the alleged sexual assault of a 22-year-old interior design student at a residential society in Ahmedabad on August 8.

According to officials at the time, the woman, who was staying as a paying guest, had gone to the terrace for a walk when the accused, identified as Dharam Singh, allegedly attacked her and sexually assaulted her.

Police had said Singh had joined as a security guard only days before the incident.

Investigators used CCTV footage and technical surveillance to trace him, with multiple teams from Anandnagar police, the Local Crime Branch and the Crime Branch involved in the search.

He was arrested shortly after the incident. Police had also examined CCTV footage from the residential premises as part of the investigation.

Sources said the footage showed Singh moving through the building and towards the terrace before the alleged assault. The woman was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment.

The subsequent investigation also brought the functioning of the security agency that had employed Singh under scrutiny.

Anandnagar police registered a separate case against the owner of the agency under provisions of the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act after investigators alleged that the agency’s licence had expired and that mandatory requirements relating to the recruitment and deployment of security guards had not been followed.

The latest development is the filing of the charge sheet within 21 days of the case being registered. Police said the investigation was completed promptly after examining forensic, circumstantial and technical evidence.

In a statement, police said: “Based on forensic, circumstantial and technical evidence, the investigation was completed promptly, and the charge sheet was filed before the Court.”

The filing of the charge sheet marks the completion of the police investigation and places the evidence gathered during the probe before the court for further proceedings.
