Two mobile phone snatchers arrested by Delhi Police; three stolen phones recovered

New Delhi, June 2 (IANS) The East District Police on Tuesday arrested two alleged snatchers and recovered three stolen mobile phones and a scooter used in the commission of the crime. The arrests were made by the staff of Police Station New Ashok Nagar following a detailed investigation involving CCTV analysis and technical surveillance.

According to Delhi Police, the accused have been identified as Varun Sharma and Adil, both residents of Khora Colony in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Police said the operation led to the recovery of a Honda Activa scooter used during the offence and helped solve three criminal cases linked to mobile phone theft and snatching.

The case originated on May 28, when a complaint of mobile phone snatching was reported at Police Station New Ashok Nagar. The incident took place on Shani Bazaar Road in the Kondli area of East Delhi.

According to the complainant, he was returning home from work when two unidentified men riding a scooter approached him from behind and snatched his mobile phone before fleeing the spot. Based on his statement, police registered FIR No. 305/2026 under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation.

To crack the case, a dedicated team comprising Sub-Inspector Sidhanshu, Head Constables Anil, Nitin, Bobby, and Ajit was formed under the supervision of the Station House Officer (SHO) of New Ashok Nagar and the overall guidance of the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Kalyanpuri.

During the investigation, police examined CCTV footage from the crime scene and surrounding areas, including routes that the suspects were likely to have used while escaping. Through detailed analysis of the footage and technical inputs, investigators identified two suspects travelling on a white Honda Activa scooter bearing an Uttar Pradesh registration number.

The CCTV footage reportedly captured the accused carrying out the snatching. Further verification revealed that the scooter was registered in the name of a printing company located in Sector-10, Noida.

Police subsequently contacted the company owner, who informed investigators that the scooter was being used by one of his employees, identified as Hrithik. During questioning, Hrithik disclosed that he had lent the scooter to his friends, Varun Sharma and Adil, on the day of the incident.

Based on this lead, police conducted raids at multiple locations and successfully apprehended both suspects. The scooter allegedly used in the crime was recovered and seized as evidence.

The accused were produced before the court, following which police obtained their custody for further interrogation. During sustained questioning, both men allegedly confessed to their involvement in the mobile phone snatching case.

Their disclosures also led to the recovery of the complainant’s mobile phone as well as two other mobile phones connected to separate theft and snatching cases registered in the area. With these recoveries, police said they have successfully worked out three criminal cases.

Varun Sharma, aged 23, is a resident of Indra Vihar, Khora Colony, Ghaziabad. He has studied up to Class 10 and works as a labourer in a printing company. Police records indicate that he was previously involved in a case registered at Sector-24 Police Station in Noida under provisions related to possession of stolen property and the Arms Act.

The second accused, Adil, also 23 years old and a resident of Indra Vihar, Khora Colony, is currently unemployed and has studied up to Class 8. According to police, he has an extensive criminal history and has been previously involved in multiple cases of robbery, theft, possession of stolen property, and snatching registered at various police stations in Delhi and Noida. Investigators stated that he has been named in at least 12 earlier criminal cases.

The cases solved through the latest operation include FIR No. 305/2026 registered at Police Station New Ashok Nagar, along with two separate electronic FIRs involving stolen mobile phones.

Among the recovered items are a Samsung A17 mobile phone belonging to the complainant, a Samsung mobile phone linked to one theft case, and a Redmi mobile phone connected to another case. The Honda Activa scooter used in the commission of the offence was also seized.

Police officials credited the success of the operation to prompt action, coordinated teamwork, technical surveillance, and extensive analysis of CCTV footage. They said the arrests and recoveries have helped prevent further criminal activities in the area and strengthened efforts to curb street crime in East Delhi.

Further investigation into the matter is currently underway, and police are examining whether the accused may have been involved in other similar incidents reported across the city.
