Kushinagar (Uttar Pradesh), Aug 25 (IANS) Two college students were killed, and another was seriously injured after a speeding luxury car rammed into their scooter in Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar district, police said.
The accident occurred on NH-28 under the Tamkuhiraj police station area when the three students were returning home after attending classes at Vidyawati Devi College in the Tamkuhiraj area.
The deceased have been identified as Nisha Giri and Anamika Thakur. Their bodies were recovered from the spot and sent for post-mortem examination.
The third student, identified as Alisha Khatoon, sustained serious injuries in the accident. She was initially taken to a local community health centre and later referred to Gorakhpur Medical College after her condition was found to be critical.
According to preliminary information, the luxury car was travelling at high speed when it struck the scooter carrying the three students. The impact proved fatal for two of them, while Alisha was seriously injured.
Following the accident, the car driver allegedly fled the spot. Local residents chased the vehicle and managed to intercept it near Shahi Petrol Pump at Dumarbhar under the Patherwa police station area.
Police detained two people found in connection with the vehicle and began questioning them.
Officials said empty liquor bottles and a beer carton were also recovered from the car. Police are investigating whether the occupants had consumed alcohol before the accident.
During the attempt to flee, the car also allegedly hit a 22-year-old man. The impact caused the vehicle’s front-left tyre to burst, but the driver reportedly continued driving at high speed.
The incident has sparked concern among local residents, with police examining the circumstances leading to the crash and the role of those travelling in the vehicle.
Police have launched a detailed investigation and are collecting evidence, including statements from eyewitnesses and details related to the vehicle and its occupants. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation, officials said.
