Trinamool student wing leader held in financial fraud case in Purulia

Kolkata, July 26 (IANS) Trinamool Chhatra Parishad’s (TMCP) Purulia district president, Kiriti Acharya, has been arrested on charges of alleged financial fraud, police said on Sunday.

He was arrested in Purulia on Saturday night and is scheduled to be produced before a local court. Police are expected to seek his custody for further investigation.

According to police, multiple complaints had been lodged against Acharya, including allegations of financial irregularities. He had not been seen since the Trinamool Congress’s defeat in the Assembly elections.

Acharya, who had been active on social media, had remained silent since then and did not take part in any political activities. He was finally arrested on Saturday night and taken to the police station.

Since the split in the Trinamool Congress, he was with the ‘original but minority’ faction of the party led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. However, he was not seen in public since the party’s defeat.

During the Trinamool regime, he constantly attacked the BJP and the central government on various issues on social media. However, after the change of government in the state, he was not even seen on social media at all. He also remained out of public view.

On Saturday, police arrested him based on a complaint lodged by some locals in Purulia town, accusing him of financial fraud.

The arrest comes days after police arrested Sujoy Banerjee, vice-president of the Purulia Zilla Parishad, in connection with an alleged fraud linked to the BJP government’s Annapurna Yojana for women. His nephew, Kripasindhu Banerjee, vice-president of the Puncha Panchayat Samiti, was also arrested in the same case.

With Acharya’s arrest, another Trinamool leader has come under police scrutiny in Purulia amid ongoing investigations into alleged financial irregularities.
