Chennai, Aug 24 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly will resume its sittings on Monday after a two-day weekend break, with demands for grants relating to six key departments scheduled for discussion.
Interest is high because the debate includes a department held by Chief Minister Joseph Vijay. The House will meet to take up demands for grants covering Municipal Administration and Water Supply; Information, Publicity, Stationery and Printing; School Education; Tamil Development; and Higher Education.
Members from both the ruling party and the opposition are expected to participate in the debate and raise questions on policies, spending and schemes.
Chief Minister Vijay, who also holds the Municipal Administration and Water Supply portfolio, will respond to issues raised by legislators concerning his department. Information, Publicity and School Education Minister Rajmohan and Higher Education Minister Viswanathan will also reply to the debate on their portfolios.
At the conclusion of the discussion, the ministers are expected to announce new departmental initiatives. The Chief Minister’s response and announcements are likely to draw close attention, particularly as municipal administration and drinking water supply directly affect cities, towns and expanding urban areas across Tamil Nadu.
The 2026-27 general Budget was presented in the Assembly on August 5, followed by the Agriculture Budget on August 6. A three-day general discussion on the two financial statements was held on August 7, 10 and 11. The debate concluded on August 12 after Finance Minister Maria Wilson and Agriculture Minister Vinod delivered their replies. The Assembly was then adjourned for four days in view of Independence Day celebrations.
Department-wise discussions on demands for grants began when the House reconvened on August 17. The demands of 18 departments have so far been debated and approved during the ongoing session. Proceedings were suspended on August 22 and 23 as the two days fell on Saturday and Sunday.
With the House assembling again on Monday, the focus will return to departmental spending priorities and the government’s policy direction in education, urban governance, water supply, information and Tamil development.
Following the ministers’ replies, the demands for grants will be put to the House for approval.
The sitting is expected to continue with detailed exchanges between the treasury and opposition benches over implementation of schemes, allocation of funds and the administration’s plans for the 2026-27 financial year.
