Jaipur, May 15 (IANS) Amid nationwide outrage and uncertainty following the cancellation of the NEET examination, a medical aspirant allegedly committed suicide in Rajasthan’s coaching hub, Sikar, on Friday.
Family members claimed the student had been under severe mental stress ever since the exam was cancelled. The deceased, identified as Pradeep Mahich, was found hanging in his rented room in the Jaldhari Nagar area on Piprali Road.
According to police and family members, he used his sister’s scarf to hang himself from a ceiling fan while alone in the room. Pradeep had been preparing for NEET in Sikar for the past three years and was reportedly expecting to score over 650 marks in NEET-UG 2026.
His family said he believed he had a strong chance of securing admission to a government medical college this year, but became deeply distressed after the examination was cancelled. The incident has triggered grief and anger in the coaching city, where students across the country come for competitive exam preparation.
According to family members, Pradeep lived in a rented tin-shed room on the fourth floor of a residential building along with his two sisters, both of whom are preparing for railway recruitment examinations.
On Friday afternoon, his younger sister was at coaching classes, while his elder sister was in the bathroom when the incident occurred. When she returned, she allegedly found Pradeep hanging from the ceiling fan.
She immediately cut the scarf with scissors and alerted the landlord and police. He was rushed to SK Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Pradeep was a resident of Kanika Ki Dhani village in Gudha Gorji area of Jhunjhunu district.
His father, Rajesh Kumar Meghwal, said Pradeep was the only son among four children and that the entire family had pinned their hopes on him.
The family survives on farming and daily wage labour, and relatives described their financial condition as extremely weak. Outside the mortuary at SK Hospital, grieving family members and members of the local community gathered in large numbers.
According to relatives, Pradeep had become withdrawn and depressed in recent days following the cancellation of the NEET examination.
Devastated by the death of their only son, the family members have raised serious questions regarding the government’s examination system. The Udyog Nagar Police have initiated an investigation into the matter based on the family’s report.
