One more held in Rajarhat house blast case in Bengal

Kolkata, July 19 (IANS) One more person has been arrested in connection with the house explosion in Rajarhat in Kolkata on Friday, taking the total number of arrests in the case to two, police said on Sunday.

The arrested accused, identified as Shahenshah, is a broker who allegedly helped the main accused, Mohammad Shamim, secure a rented room in the house using a fake identity. Mohammad Shamim was arrested on Saturday from Sodepur in North 24 Parganas district.

According to the police, Shahenshah was arrested after long hours of interrogation. With this, the number of arrests has risen to two in this case, while two others — a minor and house owner Zulfiqar Ali — have been detained for questioning, said the police.

The explosion took place late on Friday night in a house in the Supari Bagan area of Dakshin Narayanpur in Rajarhat, in the northern outskirts of Kolkata. One person was injured in the explosion.

Officers of the Narayanpur police station launched an investigation and detained two persons. The bomb squad went to the scene and recovered two more fresh bombs. Later, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the case. Forensic experts also went to the spot to investigate the real cause and source of the explosion.

During the investigation, the police came to know that the owner of the house in Supari Bagan where the explosion took place is Zulfiqar Ali. Police said a person named Mohammad Shamim had taken the house on rent through a broker named Shahenshah a few days ago. According to police, a search is underway for another person suspected of being involved in this incident.

Meanwhile, after receiving the news of the explosion, Rajarhat New Town MLA Piyush Kanodia visited the scene on Saturday. He spoke to the local residents and assured them of help.

“A reign of terror has been created in this entire area to scare people. Whoever has ruled here for so many years has destroyed the entire area. I want to give everyone one message — we don’t want terrorism, we want education. We will not accept machine guns or guns being handed over to anyone. We want to hand over books and pens to the youth,” said the BJP MLA.
