Massive voter roll verification drive kicks off in Maharashtra

Mumbai, June 29 (IANS) The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Maharashtra, on Monday launched a comprehensive Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the state’s electoral roll.

The massive, citizen-centric exercise aims to verify every single voter’s eligibility to ensure an error-free, transparent, and updated electoral roll. As Maharashtra’s field machinery is currently stretched thin with census-related duties, the Election Commission of India has tailored a standalone timeline for the state, running from late June through October 2026, the release said.

According to the release, the eligibility of electors is being verified as of October 1, 2026, as the qualifying date. As per Article 326 of the Constitution, eligible individuals must be Indian citizens, at least 18 years old, and ordinary residents of their respective Assembly Constituencies.

A staggering 1,00,253 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have been deployed on the ground, with backup personnel ready to be appointed to hit strict deadlines. To maintain transparency, recognised National and State political parties have already appointed 2,05,254 Booth Level Agents (BLAs) to oversee and assist in the process, with room to add more.

Out of Maharashtra’s current 9.79 crore registered electors, those whose names are already on the rolls (dating back to the last Intensive Revision of 2002-2004) simply need to verify their existing data, complete the Enumeration Form, and return it to their BLO. Existing voter information can also be cross-checked digitally via the ECINET App and the Voters’ Service Portal, the release said.

The door-to-door phase officially begins tomorrow. Election authorities have laid out a tight, strict schedule for the upcoming months.

Accordingly, BLO House-to-House (H2H) visits, distribution, and collection of Enumeration Forms will be conducted from June 30 to July 29, 2026, publication of the draft electoral rolls will be done on August 5, 2026, filing of claims and objections on the published draft will be from August 5 to September 4, 2026, disposal and resolution of all filed claims and objections will be up to October 3, 2026, and final Publication of the Electoral Rolls will be done on October 7, 2026.

Top election officials, including District Election Officers and Electoral Registration Officers, have been directed to give this initiative their undivided attention to guarantee a seamless rollout. Parallel voter awareness campaigns are also hitting the ground to ensure high public turnout.

The Deputy Chief Electoral Officer of Maharashtra, Vikram Nikam, has made an appeal to the public. The Chief Electoral Officer, Maharashtra, appeals to all eligible electors to actively participate in the Special Intensive Revision and cooperate with Booth Level Officers during house-to-house verification. This exercise aims to ensure that no eligible elector is left out and no ineligible entry remains in the Electoral Roll.
