New Delhi, June 29 (IANS) A massive search and rescue operation is underway after a man allegedly jumped into the Yamuna River from the Delhi–Noida Direct (DND) Flyway in the early hours of Monday, prompting an immediate response from the Delhi Fire Services, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local police, officials said.
According to officials, the Delhi Fire Services received information about the incident at around 1 a.m. after a caller reported that a man travelling on a scooter had allegedly jumped into the river from the flyover.
When emergency teams reached the spot, they found the man’s scooter parked on the flyway. His clothes and mobile phone were also recovered from the location, raising concerns that he had entered the river.
The missing individual has been identified as Ankit Sharma, a resident of Delhi’s Preet Vihar.
According to preliminary information, Sharma was engaged in the business of buying and selling vehicles.
Soon after the alert, rescue teams launched an extensive search operation in the Yamuna.
Personnel from the Delhi Fire Services, along with divers from the National Disaster Response Force, have been combing the river in an effort to trace the missing man.
Speaking to IANS, NDRF Inspector Praful Kumar said the force received information about the incident through the control room during the early hours of Monday and immediately mobilised its rescue personnel.
“We received information about the incident through the control room at around 3:25 a.m., and local police informed us that this happened at around 2:30 a.m. As soon as we got the alert, our battalion in Dwarka mobilised immediately for the rescue and reached the spot at around 4 a.m.,” Kumar said.
Providing an update on the operation, he said rescue personnel have been carrying out an intensive search in the river since their arrival at the site.
“The search operations have been underway since then. Our divers are searching for the man in every direction,” Kumar added.
Officials said the missing man’s family members have also reached the spot and are present during the ongoing rescue operation.
Authorities are continuing the search with the assistance of specialised divers and emergency response teams.
No trace of the missing man had been found at the time of filing this report.
