Srinagar, Aug 25 (IANS) The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police Crime Branch said on Tuesday it has filed a chargesheet in the court against the accused for cheating the family of a cancer patient.
A Crime Branch statement said that the EOW Kashmir has chargesheeted a man for cheating a cancer patient’s family on the pretext of providing medicines at cheaper rates.
The statement said that the EOW has filed a chargesheet before the Court of Sub-Judge Srinagar against Afaq Ahmad Thug, son of Ghulam Qadir, resident of New Colony near Shiwala Mandir, Anantnag, at present 10-Green Enclave, Barmuni Road, Sunjwan, Jammu, in case FIR No. 25/2026 under Section 318(4) BNS.
According to the EOW, the case originated from a written complaint alleging that the accused cheated the complainant by promising to supply medicines for his ailing wife suffering from cancer at a discounted price.
The accused dishonestly induced the complainant to pay lakhs of rupees but failed to supply the medicines. A probe was ordered, and during the investigation, the allegations were substantiated.
It also came to fore that the accused and the complainant were schoolmates in a boarding school. After completion of investigation, the chargesheet was presented before the court for judicial determination.
Meanwhile, the Crime Branch has appealed to the general public to remain vigilant against such economic frauds and report any suspicious activity to SSP EOW Kashmir. Complaints can also be lodged via email at sspeow-kmr@jkpolice.gov.in, the officials have said.
The Economic Offences Wing of J&K Crime Branch investigates high-level cases of financial frauds and scams. Such cases need dedicated teams of investigators with technological and scientific back-up. The criminals behind such crimes often use technology to fudge crimes with links spread to far-off places and accomplices otherwise thought to be beyond the long arm of the law.
