Former Tripura CM Biplab Deb hails BJP’s Bengal poll victory as ‘historic shift’, offers prayers at temple

Agartala, May 6 (IANS) Former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has said here that after more than five decades, the same party — the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) — is set to govern both the Centre and West Bengal, a development that is expected to accelerate the state’s progress.

Deb, who played a key role as co-observer during the Bengal Assembly elections and campaigned extensively in the state for several months, made the remarks on Tuesday upon returning to Tripura a day after the election results were declared.

Upon his arrival, the former Chief Minister offered puja at the 524-year-old Mata Tripura Sundari temple, one of the 51 revered Shakti Peethas, located in Udaipur in southern Tripura’s Gomati district.

The temple, built in 1501 by the erstwhile king Maharaja Dhanya Manikya, is considered the third most significant shrine in eastern India after the Kali temple at Kalighat in Kolkata and the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati.

Speaking to the media before leaving for New Delhi, Deb credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Marg Darshan” (guidance) and Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s leadership for uniting party leaders and workers to achieve what he described as the desired goal, the ousting of the Trinamool Congress government led by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

“People of West Bengal had long been yearning for freedom, as misgovernance, first under the Left Front and later under the Trinamool Congress, had adversely impacted the lives of citizens across the state,” the former Chief Minister said.

Thousands of BJP supporters and party members gathered at the Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala and along key city roads on Tuesday to welcome the former Chief Minister, who is now a Lok Sabha MP from the West Tripura Parliamentary constituency.

Credited with playing a crucial organisational role as the party’s Co-In-Charge during the high-stakes Bengal election, Deb was received with a grand roadshow that evolved into a visible display of political strength and unity.

Senior leaders, karyakartas, and enthusiastic supporters participated in large numbers, signalling renewed momentum within the BJP’s state unit.

Deb asserted that the political change in West Bengal was “essential for the security of the country”, alleging that the previous leadership had acted in ways detrimental to national interests and had failed to ensure the welfare of citizens, including women, youth, and the elderly.

In a strongly worded statement, the former Chief Minister described the electoral shift as a “liberation” for the people of West Bengal, claiming that the electoral mandate reflected a collective desire to break free from misgovernance.

He also said that the poll verdict marked a restoration of democratic confidence and instilled a renewed sense of security among the people.

Expressing gratitude, Deb credited Prime Minister Modi for what he termed a decisive political outcome, attributing the victory to the BJP leadership’s vision and commitment to national integrity.

The rally, beyond celebrating the electoral victory, also served as a strategic demonstration of strength for the BJP in Tripura.

Political observers noted that such large-scale mobilisation reflects the party’s intent to consolidate its base and project organisational unity ahead of upcoming political challenges.

As celebratory scenes unfolded across Agartala, the BJP leadership’s message remained clear — linking electoral success with broader themes of national security and political transformation.
