Rio de Janeiro, Aug 8 (IANS) Vasco da Gama has reached an agreement with River Plate to sign Argentine forward Facundo Colidio, the Brazilian club has said.
The 26-year-old agreed to a contract that runs until December 2029 after undergoing a medical in Rio de Janeiro.
Vasco confirmed the news on Friday on social media along with a photo of Colidio wearing the club’s black and white shirt, reports Xinhua.
Local media reported that Vasco will pay 4.5 million U.S. dollars for 50 percent of the attacker’s economic rights, with an option to purchase the remaining 50 percent.
Colidio made 86 appearances for River Plate across all competitions following his 2023 move from Inter Milan.
The move comes a few weeks after Vasco appointed Pedro Emanuel as their new manager. The 51-year-old signed a deal that runs until December 2027 and will be joined by assistant coaches Rui Gomes and Pedro Correia.
“The coach will begin working on Saturday to accompany the daily activities and will hold his first press conference on Monday,” Vasco said in a statement.
Emanuel replaces Renato Gaucho, who was sacked last month after a poor run of results. His previous managerial experience includes spells at Coimbra, Estoril, Almeria, Al-Ain and Al-Nassr, among other clubs.
Four-time Brazilian champion Vasco are in a battle to avoid relegation, having secured 20 points from the first 18 games of the season.
Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama (Vasco da Gama Club of Rowing), which started as a rowing club before building itself into a multi-sport club, is now mostly known for its men’s football team, which currently competes in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, the top tier of the Brazilian football league system, and in the Campeonato Carioca, the state of Rio de Janeiro’s premier state league.
The club was founded in 1898 by Brazilian workers, Portuguese Brazilians and newly arrived Portuguese immigrants. Vasco created their football department in 1915, with professionalism officially adopted in 1933 – a pioneer in Brazil.
