Srinagar, April 28 (IANS) Five people have been arrested in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar district after grenades, ammunition and other incriminating material were found on them, said police said on Tuesday.
Officials said these five persons were arrested in the Khanmoh area of the district by a police team during checking at Nard Sangri near Khanmoh.
Police said two hand grenades, two magazines, some rounds of ammunition, posters and six mobile phones were recovered from their possession.
A case under relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act has been registered at Panthachowk police station.
Further investigation is going on, and more details are awaited.
The J&K Police and the security forces are carrying out aggressive operations against terrorists, their overground workers (OGWs) and sympathisers.
Drug smugglers, drug peddlers and those involved in hawala money rackets are also on the scanner of the security forces. It is believed that funds generated through these funds are finally used to sustain terrorism. Drugs are used to destroy the future generations of J&K by making the youth slaves to drug addiction.
The ongoing 100-day-long Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir is part of the campaign to eradicate the menace of drugs. Stringent punishments have been announced against drug smugglers.
The revised strategy is aimed at targeting the entire support system of terrorism in the union territory rather than just focusing on the gun-wielding terrorists. It also involves preventing infiltration, exfiltration, drug smuggling and drone activities initiated from across the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB) by Pakistan-backed terrorist outfits.
These drones are used to drop payloads of arms/ ammunition, drugs and cash to support terrorism in the union territory. J&K has a 740-km-long LoC guarded by the Army and a 240-km-long IB guarded by the Border Security Force (BSF).
The LoC is situated in Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora districts of the Valley, and in Poonch, Rajouri and partly in Jammu district of the Jammu division. The International Border is situated in Samba, Kathua and Jammu districts.
