Kolkata, June 18 (ANS) Seven more persons were arrested in connection with an incident in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district where a group of Trinamool Congress supporters led by Regina Bibi, wife of arrested party leader Jahangir Khan, tried to storm the Falta Police Station in the district on June 16 in an attempt to free him from police custody.
The arrests were made by the Diamond Harbour District Police. With these seven new arrests, the number of those in custody in the case has increased to 15. Eight other accused were arrested earlier during the last couple of days.
Meanwhile, insiders from the district police said that more sections, both under the Arms Act, 1959 and the Explosives Act, 1884, have already been slapped against absconding Regina Bibi, who has been identified by the police as behind the attempted storming of the Falta Police Station on Tuesday.
However, their attempts to storm the police station and free the arrested leader from police custody were foiled by state police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel present there, who resorted to a baton charge against the violent mob.
During the probe and the interrogation of the eight people arrested in the matter, the police have come to know that the planning for the attack on the Falta Police Station was done at a secret location on Monday, which was convened by Regina Begum.
“It was decided in that meeting that supporters would gather at a specific location, about three kilometres from Falta police station. A plan was to suddenly storm the police station in an organised manner from there and rescue Jahangir Khan,” said a district police officer.
Khan, the party’s candidate from Falta in the recently concluded Assembly elections, was once considered the “terror and the final word” in the area.
On Wednesday, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari was at Falta. While addressing a public programme, he directed the Diamond Harbour Police district to take strong action under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against those who attempted to storm Falta Police Station.
The Chief Minister also directed the police to confiscate the properties of the attackers and thereafter put them up for auction
