DMK launches major organisational overhaul after 2026 poll defeat

Chennai, July 1 (IANS) In its first major organisational exercise after losing power in the 2026 Assembly elections, the DMK has constituted a 10-member advisory committee to recommend sweeping structural reforms across the party, signalling an effort to rebuild its organisation and reconnect with the people after its electoral setback.

The defeat in the 2026 Assembly polls, which paved the way for the party’s ouster from power after five years in office, prompted the leadership to undertake a comprehensive review of the organisation and its functioning at every level.

DMK President M.K. Stalin announced the formation of the committee, comprising senior party leaders Thangam Thennarasu, Geetha Jeevan, A.R. Chakrapani, S.S. Sivasankar, Tamilarasi Ravikumar, M.M. Abdulla, I. Paranthamen, S. Murasoli, Ezhilan Naganathan and S.K.P. Karuna.

The panel has been entrusted with the task of recommending a uniform organisational structure from the grassroots branch units to the party headquarters. The proposed reforms are expected to streamline the party’s functioning, improve coordination between different organisational tiers and strengthen the DMK’s connect with workers and the public.

According to Stalin, the restructuring exercise is part of a broader process of organisational renewal and reconstruction aimed at correcting shortcomings identified during the party’s review and preparing the organisation for future political challenges.

Soon after the Assembly election results, the DMK leadership had initiated an extensive post-election assessment by constituting 19 field study teams comprising 38 senior functionaries.

These teams travelled across the State, interacted with district units, cadre and local leaders, and collected feedback on the reasons behind the party’s electoral defeat and the organisational weaknesses that emerged during the campaign.

The recommendations of those field teams have now formed the basis for the newly- constituted advisory committee, which will prepare a road map for comprehensive structural reforms across the organisation.

Party leaders said the committee would examine the existing organisational framework at every level and suggest measures to make the party more efficient, responsive and better equipped to meet emerging political challenges.

The exercise is also expected to focus on strengthening grassroots units, enhancing internal coordination and ensuring greater public outreach as the DMK seeks to rebuild after its loss in the Assembly elections.
