Chennai, May 12 (IANS) In the wake of the DMK’s defeat in the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, party General Secretary Duraimurugan on Tuesday announced that a crucial meeting of District Secretaries would be held on May 14 at the party headquarters here under the chairmanship of DMK President M.K. Stalin.
The meeting, scheduled to be held at 10.30 a.m. at the ‘Kalaignar Arangam’ hall inside Anna Arivalayam, is expected to review the party’s electoral setback, organisational challenges and future political strategy.
All District Secretaries have been asked to attend without fail.
The announcement comes amid a major political transition in Tamil Nadu, where actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay led his party to power, ending nearly six decades of political dominance by the DMK and the AIADMK. Vijay’s party secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly and subsequently formed the government with the support of alliance partners. Vijay was sworn in as the Chief Minister on Sunday.
The DMK, which was seeking another term in office, managed to win only 60 seats and emerged as the principal Opposition party in the Assembly. The defeat was particularly significant as Chief Minister and DMK President Stalin himself lost in his constituency. Despite the setback, several senior ministers from the previous DMK government retained their seats. Those who won included Udhayanidhi Stalin, I. Periyasamy, E.V. Velu, M.R.K. Panneerselvam, Anitha Radhakrishnan, Sekarbabu, K.N. Nehru, Rajakannappan, Sattur Ramachandran, Thangam Thenarasu, Meyyanathan, and Raghupathy.
However, a number of prominent ministers and senior leaders were defeated. Among those who lost were Duraimurugan himself, Health Minister M. Subramanian, Moorthy, Finance Minister P.T.R. Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, T.M.O. Anbarasan, Nasser, and Anbil Mahesh.
Following the election results, the DMK Legislature Party elected Udhayanidhi Stalin as the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, signalling a generational shift in the party’s leadership structure.
