CM Sarma briefs FM Sitharaman on Assam flood damage

Guwahati, Aug 21 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday that he briefed Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on the state’s ongoing flood response, including damage assessment, reconstruction plans and measures to restore the livelihoods of affected families.

Chief Minister Sarma added that he met Sitharaman in New Delhi and apprised her of the situation arising from the recent floods in the state.

He said the discussion focused on the assessment of damage caused by the floods and the roadmap prepared by the state government to rebuild affected areas.

“It is always a pleasure to meet Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Ji, who has consistently been a strong champion of Assam’s interests and aspirations,” CM Sarma said in a post on social media platform X.

The Chief Minister added that he also briefed the Finance Minister on the ongoing Assam flood response and the steps being taken by the state government to address the impact of the disaster.

According to Chief Minister Sarma, the state government is working on restoring essential infrastructure and helping flood-hit families recover their livelihoods.

He said that Sitharaman listened to the concerns raised by Assam with “great attention and sensitivity” and assured him of the Centre’s continued support.

“I am deeply grateful for her positive response and assurance that the Union government will stand firmly with Assam as we work to help every flood-affected family rebuild their lives,” Chief Minister Sarma said.

The meeting comes as Assam continues to assess the impact of flooding across several parts of the state.

The state government has been undertaking relief and rehabilitation measures while simultaneously assessing damage to roads, bridges, public infrastructure, agricultural land and other assets.

The Chief Minister has repeatedly highlighted the need for coordinated support from the Centre for rehabilitation and reconstruction following major natural disasters in the state.

The discussions with the Union Finance Minister are expected to assume significance as Assam prepares its detailed requirements for post-flood reconstruction and restoration.

The state government is also focusing on restoring economic activity and supporting families whose livelihoods have been disrupted by the floods.
