Kolkata, Aug 28 (IANS) The Calcutta High Court on Friday fixed the time limit for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to complete its new probe in the rape & murder of a woman junior doctor of state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital here in August 2024.
A division bench of Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh announced the deadline as the CBI submitted a progress report on the fresh investigation in the matter during a closed-door hearing.
After studying the progress report, the bench directed the CBI to wind up the fresh investigation process within the next three weeks, sources aware of the proceedings in the closed-door hearing said.
It is learnt that the family members of the victim had earlier filed a plea to investigate 54 aspects in the case, on which the CBI counsel informed the court that it had investigated 16 aspects, sources said.
The CBI, sources said, informed the court about the aspects it had investigated in the fresh phase of the investigation. It is learnt that on the night of August 8, 2024, when the incident took place, a delivery boy had brought dinner for the doctors working in the Emergency Department of RG Kar along with the victim.
The CBI told the court that the investigators have questioned the delivery boy. In addition, sources said, CBI also informed the court that the four doctors who had eaten with the victim that night have also been questioned.
Thereafter, the CBI counsel sought four weeks of time from the court for winding up the fresh investigation process. But the court granted three weeks only.
The next hearing in the matter had been fixed on September 24.
The Kolkata police initially investigated the case before it was transferred to the CBI following court intervention. Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer attached to Kolkata Police, was the sole convict in the case and is currently serving a life sentence.
However, the victim’s family members then accused the CBI of a lackadaisical probe in the matter by just signing on the dotted lines on the initial investigation by the Kolkata Police. Thereafter, the Calcutta High Court ordered the CBI to start a fresh investigation in the matter with a new probe team.
Accordingly, a new CBI team started a fresh probe in the matter.
