Patna, July 22 (IANS) The Bihar Legislative Assembly witnessed heated exchanges on Wednesday after BJP MLA Vinay Bihari alleged that his vehicle was attacked during a students’ protest while he was on his way to attend the ongoing monsoon session in Patna.
Raising the issue in the House, the legislator claimed that anti-social elements vandalised his vehicle by smashing its windows near Dak Bungalow Chowk, Patna, and demanded strict action against those responsible.
Describing the incident as a serious threat to the safety of elected representatives, Vinay Bihari said the attack raised concerns about the security of public representatives in the state.
He urged the government to identify the accused and ensure stringent legal action.
Presenting his remarks in the Assembly through a poem, Vinay Bihari said, “With sickles and weapons in hand, they were ready to take my life today… It was my good fortune. Thanks to the presence of mind of my bodyguards, I escaped unharmed, although every window of my vehicle was shattered. I survived today because I am an MLA.”
He further appealed to opposition members not to incite crowds by announcing the movement of legislators, alleging that such actions encourage attacks on public representatives.
“I have survived today by sheer luck. I thank the House for allowing me to place this matter before everyone,” he added.
The allegations triggered sharp exchanges between the treasury and opposition benches.
Members from both sides traded accusations, leading to noisy scenes and repeated interruptions during the proceedings.
Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar intervened to restore order, urging members to maintain decorum.
He acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations and assured the House that appropriate action would be taken in accordance with the law against those found responsible.
Despite the Speaker’s intervention, the uproar continued for some time as ruling and opposition members remained firm on their respective positions.
Outside the Assembly, BJP leader Hari Bhushan Thakur Bachaul commented on the student protests that had taken place in Patna earlier in the day.
Referring to the demonstrators, he alleged, “These are not students. These are people who have come from Bangladesh and Nepal. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will not resign.”
The statement is a political allegation. There has been no publicly presented evidence to substantiate the claim that protesters were from Bangladesh or Nepal, and no official confirmation from authorities supporting the assertion.
Meanwhile, student organisations have maintained that the protest was organised over issues including alleged examination paper leaks and education-related demands.
