Guwahati, July 22 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that during the last few months, after the pre-monsoon showers caused flood-like situations in the state, more than 7.27 lakh people across 25 districts were impacted.
Sharing the latest flood status on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister said that 7,27,506 people have been affected by floods between April 29 and July 21 this year, with relief and rehabilitation efforts continuing across the state.
According to the official figures released by the Chief Minister, floods have impacted 25 districts — Goalpara, Cachar, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Biswanath, Charaideo, Nalbari, Bajali, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Baksa, Sivasagar, Darrang, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Udalguri, Golaghat, Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan and Hojai.
CM Sarma wrote on X, “This is the extensive damage caused by the #AssamFloods. I have assured the affected families that they are not alone in this crisis. Our Government is standing with them in every step of rehabilitation and rebuilding of livelihoods.”
The data showed that 74 revenue circles and 1,700 villages have been affected by the floods.
A total of 95 relief camps are currently operational across the state, providing shelter to 18,574 displaced people. Besides, 469 relief distribution centres have been set up to ensure the supply of essential food items, drinking water and other relief materials to affected families.
The official figures revealed that 31 people have lost their lives due to floods during the current season.
Sivasagar reported the highest number of fatalities at 14, followed by Charaideo with six, Jorhat five, Dhemaji and Golaghat two each, and Sonitpur and Karbi Anglong one each. In addition, one person died in an urban flood incident in Kamrup Metropolitan district on April 19.
The Chief Minister’s update also stated that three persons remain missing — one each from Dhemaji, Charaideo and Karbi Anglong.
The floods have caused widespread damage to residential properties, with 401 houses completely destroyed and another 1,848 partially damaged.
The disaster has also taken a heavy toll on livestock, with 185 animals reported washed away or dead, including 119 large animals, 31 small animals and 35 poultry birds.
The Assam government, in coordination with district administrations and disaster response agencies, has been continuing relief distribution, rehabilitation measures and restoration of essential services in the affected areas.
The Chief Minister visited the flood-affected people in the relief camp at Charaideo. “Visited the relief camp in Charaideo to assess the arrangements and interact with those affected by the floods. Medical teams and all essential services are in place. I assured every family that the we will stand by them through relief, rehabilitation and recovery.”
