Kolkata, Aug 13 (IANS) A 32-year-old woman died under mysterious circumstances at her rented house in Dum Dum Cantonment, North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, on Thursday, officials said.
The woman, identified as Jaya Pramanik, was found dead in the wee hours of Thursday. Her body, covered in blood and wrapped in a blanket, was found lying on the floor of her rented house. The police launched an investigation into the incident, which is suspected to have occurred late on Wednesday night.
According to the police, Jaya lived in a rented house in the Subhashnagar area of Dum Dum Cantonment. She has a three-year-old son. Jaya used to travel to places for work and would leave her child at an acquaintance’s house in Shyambazar, north Kolkata.
She was supposed to return to her house with her child on Wednesday night. However, when she could not be contacted over the phone, some of her acquaintances went to the area to inquire about her.
When the door of the house was opened in the wee hours of Thursday, they found Jaya’s body lying on the floor. The police said there were multiple injury marks on her body. The body was sent to Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The police suspect that the woman was murdered, based on the initial findings. Some locals claimed that Jaya worked as a sex worker. They claimed that a young man from the Jheel Colony area of Bediapara frequently visited her house. The police are trying to trace and question him in the case.
There are allegations that a CCTV camera in front of the rented house had been damaged. However, the police said they had obtained footage showing people entering and leaving the house and were examining it. Jaya’s acquaintances and some relatives have also been questioned.
“A case under relevant sections has been registered. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. The real cause of death will be ascertained once the reports arrive. Investigation is on,” said a senior officer of the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate.
