Biswanath, April 1 (IANS) Ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, several voters in Assam’s Biswanath district on Wednesday said the government’s development and welfare initiatives will influence their voting decisions.
Many residents said they have made their decision, emphasising that visible progress and government schemes have reached a large section of the population.
Speaking to IANS, a voter said, “We will vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party because it delivers results. The BJP works for everyone, whether they belong to minority communities or the majority. We have received housing benefits, and ration has also been provided.”
Another voter expressed confidence in the party’s electoral prospects, saying, “The BJP will win. They have done good work, and we will give 100 per cent of our votes to the BJP.”
Echoing similar sentiments, a resident highlighted the impact of Central welfare schemes.
“We are supporting the BJP because it has ensured development at every level. Benefits from the Prime Minister’s schemes have reached every household. Ration distribution and other facilities have improved our lives. Compared to the 15 years of rule by the Indian National Congress, the BJP has delivered more than double the development in just 10 years,” the voter said.
Another local resident described himself as ‘Khilonjia’ and reiterated his support for the BJP.
“We have always stood with the BJP because it works for the people. What the Congress could not achieve in many years, the BJP has accomplished in a much shorter time,” he said.
Some voters also spoke about changing perceptions among minority communities.
“People now want to support development, and minority communities have realised this. Earlier, they were influenced by Congress, which ruled for many years and maintained control through fear. But development did not reach them in a meaningful way. Now, under the BJP government, development has reached minority areas as well, and people feel more included and secure,” a voter said.
The voter further added, “Over the past decade, with the BJP in power at both the state and central levels, people have seen the benefits of development-oriented governance. When the BJP talks about ‘intruders’, we are not afraid because we are not intruders. We also want strict action against illegal infiltration.”
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a large public rally in Gogamukh and then Biswanath, expressing confidence that the BJP would return to power for a third consecutive term. He highlighted Assam’s rich cultural heritage, recalling iconic figures such as Lachit Borphukan and Bhupen Hazarika, whose contributions continue to inspire the nation.
Emphasising the state’s importance, the Prime Minister said that a “Viksit Bharat” (developed India) can only be achieved through a “Viksit Assam”.
Meanwhile, the BJP on March 31 released its manifesto for the April 9 Assembly elections, outlining its commitment to implementing the Uniform Civil Code, protecting the land and heritage of indigenous communities, and accelerating development initiatives.
The Congress, led by its national President Mallikarjun Kharge, also unveiled its manifesto, promising key guarantees such as financial assistance for women, health insurance, and land rights if voted to power.
