Trinamool MP Saugata Roy faces protests from BJP workers, people outside Kolkata airport

Kolkata, Aug 18 (IANS) Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha MP Saugata Roy on Tuesday faced protests from a section of people and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers outside the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International airport near Kolkata.

The protesters surrounded his car outside the city airport, waving black flags and showing shoes to the veteran Trinamool Congress leader.

Slogans such as ‘Go back’ and ‘Thief, thief’ were also raised by the protesters.

Later, airport authorities and police rescued Saugata Roy.

On Tuesday, there was a meeting at the Airport Authority office.

Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy is a Lok sabha member from the Dum Dum constituency and that is why he was called to the meeting.

As soon as Roy arrived, the mob as well as BJP workers and supporters surrounded his car and kept asking the Trinamool Congress MP to go home.

Saugata Roy tried to talk to the protesters by lowering the window of the car. However, it was of no use. The protesters were unwilling to listen to anything. After a while, the airport authorities and police rescued the Trinamool MP.

After the BJP government came to power in the state, Saugata Roy, a part of Mamata Banerjee-led faction of Trinamool Congress, had faced one round of protest.

At the end of May this year, an agitated mob protested around him in Nimta area of North 24 Parganas district.

Eggs were thrown at him while slogans of thieves were also raised.

The Trinamool MP alleged that BJP workers and supporters were behind the incident. This time, a protest was held around Saugata Roy at the airport premises and slogans of ‘thief, thief’ were similarly raised against him.

Commenting on Tuesday’s protest, BJP MLA Arijit Bakshi said, “The Trinamool Congress MP (Saugata Roy) has never been on the side of the locals. He was only seen organising picnics. Even when the people of Dum Dum were submerged in water up to their waists, he was never seen standing by the people with his dhoti folded. If he had any sense of self-respect, he should have resigned and left. The common people of Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency get angry on seeing him. He has no connection with Dum Dum. He is the shameless Trinamool leader who clings to his post and chair.”
