Kolkata, Sep 6 (IANS) Trinamool Congress leader Kajal Ghosh has been arrested in an old land-grabbing case in Phansidewa in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district, police said on Sunday.
This influential Trinamool leader was arrested last night on serious charges of using his political influence to forge documents and grab government land of a widow.
He was to be produced in court, where the police will seek his custody for further investigation into the matter.
The former Trinamool coordinator of Phansidewa Assembly constituency in Siliguri subdivision of Darjeeling district and member of Siliguri-Jalpaiguri Development Authority (SJDA) has been accused of occupying more than an acre of agricultural land of a widow and opening a bought leaf tea factory.
According to the police, about 9 years ago, Ghosh took possession of the government land in the name of the widow in Bora Paikpara Mouza of Bidhannagar through forged documents. Later, he set up a tea processing factory called ‘Srirupa Tea and Industry’.
The woman was allegedly threatened with being killed if she protested. Although she could not take any action at that time due to fear of political influence, with the change of regime in the state, she on August 7, filed a written complaint against Ghosh and his wife at the Phansidewa police station.
Based on the complaint, officers of Phansidewa police station arrested Ghosh from the neighbouring Khoribari area. After the arrest, the Trinamool leader was taken to the Khoribari police station. According to the police, apart from land grabbing, there are several old charges against the arrested leader for anti-social activities.
After the change of government in the state following the Assembly election, a large number of Trinamool Congress leaders, former ministers, and councillors were arrested on various charges including extortion, assault, land grabbing, molestation, and intimidation.
