Roger Federer to compete in exhibition event against Andy Roddick at US Open

New Delhi, Aug 23 (IANS) The 20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer will be competing in a one-night exhibition event at the US Open on Wednesday. Five-time champion in New York, Federer, will be competing against 2003 champion Andy Roddick, the US Open organisers confirmed.

The Federer vs Roddick battle will be a one-set clash as Flushing Meadows will see more legends competing in the one-night event. Federer will partner four-time US Open champion John McEnroe for a doubles battle against Roddick and two-time winner Andre Agassi in what promises to be another enthralling clash in New York.

“For one night only, five-time consecutive US Open champion and tennis icon Roger Federer returns to New York to compete in a once-in-a-lifetime exhibition event under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday, Aug. 25. He’ll play alongside 2003 US Open champion and longtime rival Andy Roddick, as well as fellow tennis legends and US Open champions Andre Agassi and John McEnroe,” the US Open body confirmed through a statement.

Federer, who retired in 2022, was one of the most successful players in New York. He won five US Open titles, a joint record in the Open Era he holds with Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors. He wrested insane dominance at Flushing Meadows as he won all five of his titles consecutively from 2004 to 2008.

Roddick is a one-time US Open champion, having won the title in 2003 after beating Juan Carlos Ferrero. He faced Federer eight times in Grand Slams and could not get the better of the Swiss legend, but this promises to be a fascinating battle in the exhibition event.

McEnroe is known as one of the most successful tennis players too, having won seven Majors. He won in New York four times in 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1984. The American shares an intriguing battle with Agassi, whom he faced four times in his career and has a 2-2 head-to-head record with him. Agassi won eight Majors in his fabled career, including two in New York in 1994 and 1999.

The US Open 2026 kicks off on Monday with qualifying rounds and mixed doubles. The main draw will begin a little later on August 30.
