Shillong, April 23 (IANS) In a significant political development in Meghalaya, senior BJP legislator A.L. Hek on Thursday said he would once again reach out to former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Mukul Sangma, inviting him to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Hek said the party remains keen on expanding its footprint in the state by engaging with prominent leaders across political lines. He claimed that several sitting legislators are already in contact with the BJP, signalling possible shifts in Meghalaya’s political landscape ahead of the next Assembly polls.
According to Hek, Sangma has not declined the offer but has instead sought time to consider it.
“We have decided to give him the space he needs. At an appropriate time, we will approach him again,” the BJP leader said, indicating that the party is adopting a cautious and strategic approach in its outreach.
Former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, widely regarded as one of the most influential leaders in the state, has been the subject of interest from multiple parties in recent months. His next political move is being closely watched, as it could have a significant impact on the state’s evolving political equations.
Mukul Sangma joined the Trinamool Congress in 2021 after serving for a long time in the Congress party. Sources suggest that Sangma has been assessing the current political scenario while maintaining communication with leaders from different parties, including the Congress.
There is also speculation that he may be exploring the possibility of floating a new regional outfit, though no official confirmation has been made.
Meanwhile, Hek further claimed that at least four sitting legislators are in touch with him and could potentially switch allegiance to the BJP ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections. While he did not disclose names, the assertion points to ongoing behind-the-scenes political manoeuvring in the state.
The BJP, which has been working to strengthen its presence in Meghalaya, appears to be intensifying efforts to bring influential leaders into its fold as part of its broader electoral strategy.
With nearly two years to go for the Assembly elections, such developments are expected to shape the political narrative in Meghalaya, as parties position themselves and explore alliances in a bid to gain a competitive edge.
