Chennai, May 21 (IANS) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in five districts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday, with the weather system expected to keep conditions unsettled across the state and Puducherry for at least another week.
According to weather officials, a trough extending from the southeast Arabian Sea to the central Bay of Bengal is influencing atmospheric conditions over the region, leading to enhanced rainfall activity in several parts of Tamil Nadu.
The IMD has particularly warned of heavy rainfall in the hilly and adjoining regions of Coimbatore district, along with Nilgiris, Theni, Erode, and Dindigul districts on Thursday.
Authorities have advised residents in these areas to remain cautious, especially in vulnerable locations prone to waterlogging, landslides, and traffic disruptions. The Nilgiris district, which frequently experiences intense rainfall during such weather systems, is expected to receive significant showers. Similar conditions are also likely in the hilly belts of Coimbatore, Theni, and Dindigul districts, where localised heavy downpours may affect normal life.
The weather department has further indicated that rainfall activity is expected to intensify in additional districts on Friday.
Strong rain accompanied by gusty winds is likely over Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, and Tiruchy districts. Similar weather conditions have also been forecast for Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Erode, and Nilgiris districts.
Officials said intermittent showers and changing weather patterns are likely to continue across many regions as the atmospheric system remains active over the coming days.
The rainfall could provide relief from the prevailing summer heat in several interior districts, although isolated areas may also experience strong winds and brief periods of heavy rain.
Meanwhile, Chennai is likely to witness hot and humid conditions despite the rain activity elsewhere in the state. The maximum temperature in the city is likely to hover around 40 degrees Celsius, according to the forecast. Authorities have advised the public to follow weather updates and exercise caution, particularly in districts expected to receive heavy rainfall and strong winds.
