Dhandhuka murder: Guj court grants 2-day police remand; crime scene recreated

Ahmedabad, April 20 (IANS) Two men accused of killing a 30-year-old man following a dispute over a minor motorcycle accident in Dhandhuka town of Ahmedabad district were remanded to two-day police custody by a local court on Monday.

The accused, identified as Rizwan and Samir, were produced before the court three days after the death of Dharmesh Gamara.

The police had sought a 10-day remand to further and deepen the investigation; however, after hearing detailed arguments from both sides, the court granted only two days of custody, citing the seriousness of the offence and the requirements of the ongoing probe.

The accused were brought to the court under the escort of a convoy comprising more than 15 police personnel, with additional deployment to maintain order.

Following the court appearance, a detailed reconstruction of the crime was conducted by the police under tight and heightened security arrangements.

Authorities maintained strict security at both the court premises and the reconstruction site, citing the sensitive nature of the case and the prevailing tense atmosphere in the area.

Police officials stated that these precautionary measures were necessary to prevent any untoward incidents and to ensure that law and order was not disturbed.

The fatal dispute began when a motorcycle driven by Samir, who was travelling with his wife, was involved in a minor collision with the bike of a local youth from the Bharwad community.

During the subsequent altercation that followed the collision, Rizwan allegedly attacked Gamara with a knife, inflicting severe and fatal injuries on him.

Gamara later died due to excessive bleeding caused by the injuries sustained in the attack. The killing triggered violence in the area, characterised by incidents of vandalism, arson, and public unrest.

In response, police have registered cases of rioting against approximately 125 unidentified individuals and have initiated strict and firm action against those who were involved in the violence.

Additionally, in response to demands raised by the victim’s family members, a four-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to conduct a thorough, fair, and impartial probe into the murder case.

While a relatively peaceful atmosphere currently prevails in Dhandhuka, police have continued to maintain a strong presence in the area to ensure the continued maintenance of law and order and public safety.

Clarifying recent social media posts and rumours circulating regarding the incident, Ahmedabad Rural DySP Aastha Rana said: “Several posts and stories are currently circulating about the death of a Muslim individual following the clash that occurred after the Dharmesh Bharwad murder in Dhandhuka. This information is false. The individual mentioned is alive and currently undergoing medical treatment.”
