Delhi Police bust Rs 23.60 lakh misappropriation case, accused held with Rs 20.80 lakh cash

New Delhi, Aug 29 (IANS) The Delhi Police on Saturday arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with a case involving the misappropriation of Rs 23.60 lakh and recovered Rs 20.80 lakh in cash from his possession.

The accused has been identified as Arjun Sharma, son of Vijay Sharma, a resident of Delhi. Police said that an Activa scooter used in the crime and three mobile phones were also recovered from him.

According to the police, a complaint was received on August 21 from Sugam Gupta, son of late G.S. Gupta, a resident of Ashok Vihar. Gupta told police that he runs a chemical business in the Lal Bagh factory area and had sent his employee, Arjun Sharma, to collect Rs 23.60 lakh from a business party in Saraswati Vihar.

The accused collected the money from the party at C-522, Saraswati Vihar, at around 10.30 a.m. on August 21. He was supposed to deposit the amount in a bank. However, after collecting the cash, Sharma stopped responding to phone calls and switched off his mobile phone.

The complainant said that Sharma subsequently became untraceable along with the entire cash amount. After making efforts to locate him on his own, Gupta approached the Adarsh Nagar Police Station.

Following the complaint, a case was registered under FIR No. 587/2026 under Section 316(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on August 24 at Police Station Adarsh Nagar, and an investigation was launched.

A dedicated team comprising ASI Gopal Krishan, Head Constables Sandeep and Leela Ram, and Constable Dharmender was formed under the close supervision of SHO Inspector Rajesh Kumar Bhakar and ACP/Jahangir Puri Yogender Khokhar. The operation was carried out under the overall supervision of DCP North-West District Akanksha Yadav.

Police said that the accused had switched off his mobile phone and stopped using his known mobile numbers and social media accounts in an apparent attempt to evade detection. The investigating team conducted technical surveillance and extensive field verification to establish his whereabouts and movements.

During the investigation, police reconstructed the movement of the accused on his Activa scooter and established his probable route. Sustained efforts eventually led to his apprehension and the recovery of a substantial portion of the allegedly misappropriated amount.

Police recovered Rs 20.80 lakh in cash out of the total Rs 23.60 lakh involved in the case. The Activa scooter allegedly used by the accused and three mobile phones were also recovered.

During interrogation, it was revealed that Sharma had travelled through multiple locations, including Jaipur, Chandigarh and Manali in Himachal Pradesh, while attempting to evade detection. Despite these efforts, the police team traced and apprehended him.

The police said that further efforts are underway to recover the remaining amount involved in the case. Sharma has no previous criminal involvement, according to the police.
