Women’s T20 WC: New Zealand, Sri Lanka seek first points in crucial Group B clash (Preview)
![]()
Southampton, June 15 (IANS) New Zealand and Sri Lanka will both be desperate to open their account in Group B when they meet in a crucial Women's T20 World Cup encounter, with both sides coming into the contest on the back of defeats in their tournament openers.
New Zealand currently sit fourth in the standings after suffering a seven-wicket loss to West Indies despite posting a competitive 162/6. Their batting effort was anchored by Isabella Gaze's 39 off 29 balls after early setbacks saw Georgia Plimmer and Amelia Kerr depart cheaply. Brooke Halliday and Maddy Green added valuable runs in the latter half of the innings, pushing the total beyond 160.
However, the bowlers were unable to defend it as Hayley Matthews and Shemaine Campbelle turned the chase in the West Indies' favour. Campbelle's unbeaten 90 proved decisive as New Zealand slipped to their first defeat of the campaign.
Halliday remains New Zealand's leading run-scorer in the tournament with 40 runs, while Jess Kerr has been the standout performer with the ball, claiming two wickets.
Sri Lanka, meanwhile, find themselves at the bottom of the table following a heavy 87-run defeat to hosts England. Their bowlers endured a difficult outing as England piled up 219 for one, powered by a century from Danielle Wyatt-Hodge and a half-century from Amy Jones.
The chase never gathered momentum for Sri Lanka, who were reduced to 37 for three inside the Powerplay. Harshitha Samarawickrama and Nilakshi de Silva offered some resistance, but the target proved well beyond reach as the innings folded for 132.
Nilakshi leads Sri Lanka's scoring charts with 39 runs, while Malki Madara is the side's lone wicket-taker so far in the competition.
With both teams still searching for their first points, the contest carries added significance. Another defeat would leave either side facing an uphill battle to stay in contention for a place in the knockout stage.
When: Tuesday, June 16, 7:00 PM IST
Where: The Rose Bowl, Southampton
Where to watch: The NZ vs SL match will be broadcast on Star Sports channels, with JioHotstar live-streaming the game.

FIFA WC 2026: ‘Coming back twice gave us great confidence’, says Japan coach after Dutch stalemate
![]()
Dallas (US), June 15 (IANS) Japan head coach Hajime Moriyasu said his team gained confidence from a 2-2 draw with the Netherlands in their FIFA World Cup Group F opener, while also admitting disappointment at failing to secure victory.
Japan came from behind twice to earn a point against one of the tournament favourites the Netherlands.
"I am not satisfied with only one point, but I believe this point is worth more than a point," Moriyasu said, as quoted by Xinhua. "The players executed our game plan well and showed strong response under pressure. Coming back twice has given us great confidence."
He praised Japan's resilience against a top-level opponent. "The Netherlands is a very strong side," he said. "Our players stayed united, showed toughness and fighting spirit, and although we are disappointed not to win, this match will help us go forward."
Moriyasu said Japan would continue to improve by learning from elite opposition, noting the growing number of Japanese players competing in Europe and the steady development of youth and coaching systems at home.
Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman said he could accept the result but felt his team could have managed key moments better.
"I can accept the result. Japan also created chances," Koeman said. "It was a high-level match and both teams can take positives."
He said Japan's deeper defensive approach made it difficult for the Netherlands to find space. "They normally press high, but this time they sat deeper, which made it hard to break them down," he said.
Koeman defended his substitutions after the Netherlands lost control late in the match, saying they were aimed at stabilising the midfield and reducing pressure. He also criticised his team's defending for Japan's equalizer, saying they failed to deal with the situation around the ball while praising Japan's quality and fighting spirit.
"Don't underestimate Japan," he said. "After leading twice, we wanted to win, but they kept fighting, and they are a very good side."
Japan midfielder Daichi Kamada, who scored the late equaliser, expressed the team's aim to win the World Cup. "We hope to go further in this World Cup. Of course, there are still many areas we need to improve, but I believe we have the potential," he said.
"Compared with the last World Cup, we are more experienced now. Many players are playing in top European clubs, and we face top players every day. That is the biggest difference from before," Kamada added.

‘Forget what happened in the previous over’: Deepti reveals mindset behind routing Pakistan with 5-fer
![]()
New Delhi, June 15 (IANS) India all-rounder Deepti Sharma has shed light on the conversations that helped her side wrest control back from Pakistan in their Women's T20 World Cup opener, revealing that calmness and belief within the bowling group played a key role in scripting a dramatic turnaround.
Deepti, who produced a match-winning five-wicket haul after Pakistan made a promising start to their chase, described the performance as one of the most memorable moments of her career. The spell came after Pakistan had threatened to put India under pressure during the Powerplay. However, Deepti revealed that the mood within the camp remained composed during the first drinks break despite the early challenge.
"It's difficult to pick one moment because everything I was able to do in this game was special, but I'll go with the five-wicket haul. It's very rare in an ICC tournament to pick up a fifer and end up winning the game for your team. When the first drinks break happened, the discussion was about stepping up a little because we know the quality of talent and players we have in our side,” Deepti told JioStar.
According to the experienced spinner, the message from the leadership group and support staff was simple;, remain positive and focus only on the next opportunity.
"Even if you go for runs in one over, it doesn't matter because you'll get a chance to make a comeback in the next. Everyone stayed positive, and the same message was passed on to every bowler, to stay on their toes, focus on what they could do better in the next over, and forget what happened in the previous one,” she added.
That collective approach eventually paid dividends as India's spinners tightened the screws and triggered a collapse that swung the match decisively in their favour.
Beyond her own performance, Deepti also spoke about the importance of helping India's younger spinners develop confidence in pressure situations. With youngsters such as Shreyanka Patil and Shree Charani contributing during the tournament opener, the senior all-rounder stressed the importance of trusting one's strengths rather than overcomplicating plans.
"My message to the youngsters, or whenever there are bowling meetings, I tell them to stick to what has been working for them. Read the conditions and, if you feel your best ball or your best plans can bring you success on that wicket, then back them and leave the rest to the Almighty. If you execute your plans with self-belief, success will eventually come,” she stated.
The victory over Pakistan was also marked by a series of sharp fielding efforts, an area India had identified for improvement before the tournament. Deepti credited the team's preparation during its pre-World Cup camp for the noticeable improvement in standards.
"Before the T20 World Cup, we had a camp at the Centre of Excellence, where we worked extensively on our fielding and fitness with the coaches. We wanted to improve day by day in those areas, and I'm glad all that effort showed today,” the all-rounder said.
Several catches and athletic fielding proved crucial during Pakistan's chase, and Deepti was pleased to see the hard work translate into match situations, as she said, "They weren't the easiest catches, whether it was the one Smriti took diving forward or Jemimah's catch. It's great to see the team putting in that kind of effort, and I'm feeling very positive about the team going ahead."
Deepti's performance continued her reputation as one of India's most dependable players in global tournaments. Asked about her ability to deliver on the biggest stage, the left-arm spinner said her approach remains unchanged regardless of the opposition.
"I enjoy ICC tournaments, and this was our first game, so I wanted to start well. It's not as though we were playing against Pakistan and came in with a different mindset. I approach every game with the same mindset,” she expressed.
For Deepti, handling pressure begins long before the ball leaves her hand.
"When you want to perform in pressure situations and want to do well from the moment you begin your run-up, it toughens you up and helps you deliver, irrespective of the situation or the conditions,” she mentioned.
With India now turning its attention to its next group-stage fixture against the Netherlands at Headingley, Deepti believes the team's recent experience in English conditions could prove valuable. "Fortunately, we had a series in England before the World Cup, so we already have some understanding of the conditions,” she said.
While India have not yet played at Headingley during the tournament, Deepti is confident the side will adapt quickly. She stated, "Yes, we haven't played at Headingley yet, but we'll get a day or two to acclimatise when we practise there. We'll take the positives from this game into the next one."
India will next face the Netherlands on Wednesday at Headingley in Leeds.

Women’s T20 WC: ‘We make up for each other,’ says Jemimah after India’s win over Pakistan
![]()
Birmingham, June 15 (IANS) India batter Jemimah Rodrigues lauded the team's resilience and collective spirit following their emphatic victory over Pakistan in the Women's T20 World Cup, using a dressing-room address to highlight contributions across the squad rather than focusing solely on the headline performers.
In a video shared by the BCCI after the match, Jemimah praised the team for responding to pressure situations and backing each other throughout a contest that saw India recover from difficult moments with both bat and ball.
In her opening remarks, Jemimah singled out Shafali Verma's intent at the top of the innings. "First one's always special girls. Firstly, Shifu (Shafali). First ball, big tournament… to hit a six on the first ball," Jemimah said of the opener in a video shared by the BCCI.
She then turned her attention to senior batters Smriti Mandhana and captain Harmanpreet Kaur, whose partnership helped India regain control after an early setback.
"Two of our veterans….Smriti, well played! Harry di, well played. To the situation, you both adjusted really well."
India's middle-order finish also came in for praise, with Jemimah acknowledging the impact made by Richa Ghosh and Deepti Sharma during the closing stages of the innings.
"Richa and Deepti. Talking about how we finished the game well, I think both of you were the best examples."
However, Jemimah stressed that the victory was built on much more than boundaries and big shots. Instead, she pointed to the team's ability to support one another when individual performances fluctuated.
"It was not about the sixes, it was not about the boundaries. In bowling, what I loved the best was, there will be days when someone will bowl well and someone might not. But, we spoke about, as a team, we make up for each other."
That theme of collective responsibility continued as Jemimah reflected on India's bowling performance. After Pakistan made a brisk start to the chase, India's bowlers and fielders combined to wrest back control and trigger a collapse.
"And, I think the partnership today, the way we bowled, was outstanding. We've always been a team. We've done well. But, today, we didn't start off the way we wanted. But, the way we pulled back, I think that should give us a lot of confidence."
A significant portion of Jemimah's speech was dedicated to Deepti Sharma, whose spell proved decisive in breaking Pakistan's resistance. "I think you always stand out when the pressure is high. And, today, again, you took that responsibility with the ball."
Jemimah also praised young spinner Shreyanka Patil for her composure under pressure. "I think the way you bowled. You showed a lot of maturity. So, well done."
Fielding was another area highlighted by the India batter, with Shafali Verma receiving special mention. "Shafali Varma- Magic hands! You showed that you can always contribute. You were ready for the challenge and you did it. So, very well done."
Despite the comfortable margin of victory, Jemimah ensured that bowlers who endured difficult spells were also publicly backed. Addressing Arundhati Reddy and Kranti Goud, she reinforced the team's faith in their abilities.
"Arundhati Reddy. You are our best bowler, one of the most experienced bowlers. Everyone believes in you and I know you're going to do a great job next time. Kranti, I think the way you came, the way you bowled, was great. You are also one of our best bowlers, our powerplay specialist. Along with Renuka. So, keep going."
Jemimah also acknowledged Shree Charani's contribution before revisiting the turning point of the match — India's response after a shaky start in the field.
"Shree, very well bowled. So, last but not the least, I think the first 6 overs, things were going a little here and there. But everyone ran and came in that huddle. And, after that, things changed after Smriti's magic moment."
The batter rounded off her address by highlighting the fielding efforts that helped India tighten its grip on the contest. "So, well done on that. Deepti’s run out. Shreyanka’s brilliant catch… Jemi’s two catches in the game."

Hockey: Deepika scores brace as India women come from behind to beat USA 3-2 in Nations Cup opener
![]()
Auckland, June 15 (IANS) Deepika netted a brace and Navneet Kaur scored a goal as India women staged a remarkable comeback from two goals down to defeat the United States 3-2 in their opening Pool A match of the FIH Hockey Women's Nations Cup on Sunday at the North Harbour National Hockey Centre.
Deepika, who marked a stunning return to the Indian team with a brace, was also awarded the Player of the Match.
The USA got off to a great start and opened the scoring through Ashley Sessa (4'), who found the back of the net with a field goal in the fourth minute. The Americans doubled their advantage just three minutes later when Madeleine Zimmer (7') converted a penalty corner to put India under early pressure.
Trailing by two goals, India gradually began to assert themselves in attack. Their efforts paid off in the second quarter when drag-flick specialist Deepika (17') successfully converted a penalty corner to reduce the deficit and bring India back into the game.
The momentum continued to swing in India's favour as they earned another penalty corner midway through the quarter. Deepika (24') stepped up once again and successfully converted another penalty corner to level the score at 2-2.
India maintained the pressure and completed a stunning turnaround before halftime. Navneet Kaur (28') converted a penalty corner to hand India the lead for the first time in the match, ensuring the team entered the break with a 3-2 advantage.
The second half saw both teams battle intensely in search of goals. Both sides earned six penalty corners each over the course of the match, but neither defence allowed any further breakthroughs in the remaining two quarters.
India successfully held on to their advantage in the closing stages to secure all three points and begin their Nations Cup campaign on a winning note. Following the victory, India moved to second place in Pool A with three points, level with Japan, who lead the standings on goal difference.
India will next face Japan in their second Pool A match of the tournament on June 16 at 6:30 am.

FIFA World Cup 2026: Ayari, Gyokeres, Isak star as Sweden thrash Tunisia 5-1
![]()
Monterrey, June 15 (IANS) Yasin Ayari, Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres starred as Sweden registered an emphatic win over Tunisia in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group F encounter here at Monterrey Stadium on Monday.
Ayari broke the deadlock with a brilliant drive from outside the box. Isak made it two following a delightful turn and pass from strike partner Gyokeres before Sabri Lamouchi’s side got themselves back into the game when Omar Rekik glanced home Hannibal Mejbri’s glorious delivery for his first international goal.
The second half was all Sweden. Isak robbed Ellyes Skhiri and Gyokeres buried the loose ball to make it 3-1. Mattias Svanberg amplified the advantage moments after coming on, and Ayari sealed a morale-boosting success.
Notably, this has been one of the highest-scoring matchdays in World Cup history with 19 goals on Monday after Germany scored seven earlier in the day.
Sweden took the lead in Guadalupe in the seventh minute courtesy of Brighton midfielder Ayari's thunderbolt from outside the box, following a mix-up at the back. They doubled their lead on half an hour after a rapid break freed Isak on the left, AFC reports.
The Liverpool forward raced forward and cut inside before unleashing a shot, which goalkeeper Mouhib Chamakh failed to keep out, even though he got a hand to the ball.
Sweden threatened to overwhelm their opponents, but the match changed complexion minutes before half-time when Rekik headed home Hannibal Mejbri's teasing cross. However, the Scandinavian nation restored their two-goal cushion in the 59th minute after another defensive calamity for Tunisia.
Midfielder Ellyes Skhiri was caught in possession on the edge of the box by Isak, who fed Gyokeres and the Arsenal man fired home. Substitute Svanberg made it 4-1 late on after VAR ruled he was onside. And there was still time for another stunning goal from Ayari from outside the penalty box.

Class is permanent: ‘Impeccable’ Japanese fans praised for tidying up Dallas Stadium after FIFA WC thriller against Netherlands
![]()
New Delhi, June 15 (IANS) They came, they cheered, and true to their iconic tradition, they cleaned. After a thrilling 2-2 draw against the Netherlands at the Dallas Stadium, Japanese football fans once again stole the spotlight at the FIFA World Cup by staying behind to clean up the stands.
While most spectators headed for the exits after the high-octane encounter, the Japanese supporters stayed back. Armed with large blue trash bags hundreds of fans systematically combed through rows of seats, picking up discarded bottles, food wrappers, and cups left behind by the spectators.
The global football governing body, FIFA, took to social media to praise the gesture, sharing images of the stands with the caption: "Japan fans doing what they do... supporters once again demonstrated their impeccable manners, tidying the stands before departing Dallas Stadium."
In another post, FIFA shared a video of a Japanese supporter, who explains the reason fans clean the stadium after each game.
"That's a culture, but more like a respect for everything: respect for players, supporters and also for the stadium. We are honoured to be here. We don't want to make the mess and then leave it," a supporter said in a video shared by FIFA on X.
Reacting to the gesture, netizens applauded Japanese fans and said, "The world needs to learn from Japan. This is commendable." A user wrote, "Mad respect to Japan one of the mature people around the world."
Another user wrote, "This culture promotes their country more than the football team, and it’s the biggest culture in this World Cup. Respect to Japan." A fan said, "This country just keeps winning my heart." A user wrote, "Class is permanent. Respect to the Japan fans once again!"
