‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ art director says ancient temples are his reference points
Chennai, Sep 21 (IANS) National Award-winning art director Thota Tharrani has disclosed that temples provided the best reference for his team to create sets for director Mani Ratnam's much-awaited magnum opus "Ponniyin Selvan 1", the story of which is set in the tenth century. In a video clip released by Lyca productions, the firm that is making the film along with director Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies, the ace art director is seen saying: "I am doing this film with Mani (Mani Ratnam) after 28 years."
Disclosing that he works out whatever he wants first on paper even today, the art director says: "Whatever I want, I work out on a paper. I work out on a graph, even today."
Stating that the Latha Mandapam was the first set that the art department did for the film, the art director says: "Mani explained to me that he needed a little water front. So, what we did was to erect the whole water pond --two bodies and then the centre passage. It would lead to the exterior of the wall."
Giving details of how they went about recreating the monuments of that era, he says: "We had a person to research on what was used at that time. For instance, did they write on palm leaves or on leather? Yalis were not kept like this. They were only kept in certain areas and things like that. One major source of information is the temples. These are the best references we can get. Two pillars cannot be the same. Only alternate pillars would have one design."
The art director also sheds light on the enormous challenge his team faced while working on this epic film.
"We had some people to get dresses made for the animals. It was not easy. Everyday morning, (one had to) dress up the horse and give the actors -- swords and the spears. Plus, dummies were made. We had to do it in wood, we had to do it in fibre glass and we had to do it in steel with fibre glass and supply them whenever they wanted."
However, the art director and his team seems to have relished the challenge.
"We are making something which is already an epic. So, we have tried to work out on the epic," he signs off.

Our bodies can change, but our spirit need not: Kajal Aggarwal
Chennai, Sep 21 (IANS) Kajal Aggarwal, who has now taken a liking for horse riding, said that our bodies could change but our indomitable spirit and burning passion need not.The actress, who only months after delivering a baby, is back at work shooting for director Shankar's much-awaited 'Indian 2', featuring Kamal Haasan in the lead, took to Instagram to explain how she has got back into the grind because of her determination and passion for cinema.
Posting a video clip of her riding a horse, she wrote: "Eager and excited, I jumped back into work four months post-partum! Little did I realise that it would feel like starting from scratch. My body wasn't the same as how it used to be. Pre-baby, I could endure very long workdays with taxing amounts of physical activity and then hit the gym."

"Our bodies can change/ may change/ will change but our indomitable spirit and burning passion, need not. We've got to just keep showing up for ourselves and consistently making each day count. It's all about what we choose to prioritise to focus on and not feel guilty about our choices."

White love
Kareena's satin snowy saree amped up with a crystal border is a must for every young girl out there. To jazz her look further, she paired the saree with a statement blouse embellished with crystals. She keeps the makeup classic with kohl eyes, and a pink lipstick. Eminem’s daughter explains why she was ‘bothered’ when asked about their relationship
Los Angeles, Sep 20 (IANS) Popular rapper Eminem's 26-year-old daughter Hailie Jade is speaking out on the attention surrounding her relationship with her father.Hailie Jade recently hosted a 'Ask Me Anything' episode of her podcast, but that doesn't mean she should only be asked the famous rapper.
Addressing the questions she received about the 'Slim Shady' artiste, Hailie spoke on how it feels receiving questions about only her dad, reports eonline.com.
"Does it bother me when I get asked about my dad?" Hailie said on her 'Just a Little Shady' podcast "Because a lot of questions were about my dad."
As she put it, "The best way to say this is yes and no... Honestly, it's to a point. I obviously expect it. And there's certain things I can understand why people are just genuinely curious about, as anyone would be when you've kind of grown up half in the spotlight."
However, she said there's a balance to be had when growing up in the public eye, saying, "Once it gets past that point though, I'm like, 'I'm a person too.'"
The 26-year-old noted that she has more to offer than just being Eminem's daughter.
"So, it becomes tricky because I get it," Hailie added.
"But then, after a certain extent, I'm not going to speak on behalf of anyone. I'm not going to answer stuff that I don't specifically have the answers to."
Hailie detailed how her life was impacted by all the curiosity surrounding her father.
"I feel like growing up, when it would happen, I would get more bothered by it because I was like, 'Why do people care?'" Hailie said.
"I was young and I didn't totally understand the situation so I was like, that's my dad. I don't ask you about your dad."
Though some questions have been OK to answer, Hailie noted that others would cross a line.
"And there are certain things that, yeah, that's just weird that you want to know that, but then things that have been a little bit shared I understand why people are like, 'OK is this true?'" Hailie added.
"Some stuff it's just like, that's weird. Let's move on."

Essar Group targets key role in building market for hydrogen
London, Sep 20 (IANS) North-west England's Stanlow oil refinery has stood near the banks of the river Mersey for almost 100 years. But, today, its managers want to ensure it has a low-carbon future over the next century. It produces about 17 per cent of road fuels in the UK and some heavy investment is going into decarbonising the facility -- funding plans to capture emissions and store them underground, Financial Times reported.Essar Group, the India-based conglomerate, owns Stanlow and believes that, by deploying carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) technology, the plant will be able to prolong its life. It intends the business to play a key role in the UK's plans to build out a market for hydrogen, as a low-carbon fuel for heavy industry and transportation.
"Our company view is that carbon capture will be an important part of manufacturing for our industry and that's why we're committing to it now," says Jon Barden, chief operating officer of Essar Oil. "We are firmly of the belief that delivering net zero (emissions) is a good thing for us as a business, as the transition for hydrocarbons will be a long one," he adds, Financial Times reported.
Much hinges on making CCUS a success. The UK government last year backed two CCUS clusters for fast-track development, including the HyNet north-west project that the Stanlow refinery is part of.
CCUS has a chequered history, with the UK government pulling funding in the last decade and doubts over the effectiveness of some international projects in operation. But the UK government has recommitted to the technology and wants to have at least five industrial clusters around the country to enable the capture of emissions from heavy industry.
Essar says the chemistry and engineering is widely utilised and understood in the oil industry - though generally for maximising output by reinjecting CO2 into oilfields to squeeze out extra supply, rather than cutting emissions.
As part of the HyNet cluster in the north-west of England, the plant will be used to produce so-called blue hydrogen. Blue hydrogen is created from gas but with the emissions sequestered to create a low or zero carbon fuel. This can replace the gas used to provide power to run the facility and kick-start a wider hydrogen economy, by providing a low carbon fuel for other industries, Financial Times reported. "We want to demonstrate that this is a viable technological solution and that we can implement and run it sustainably, as part of the company's own transition to lower carbon," Barden says. "The target is to get to net zero by 2040?.?.?. but getting to 70-80 per cent of net zero is possible within 10 years."
