Japanese cabinet’s approval rate dives into danger zone: Poll

Tokyo, Sep 19 (IANS) The Japanese Cabinet's public approval rating plummeted to 29 per cent, dropping below 30 per cent into a "danger zone", a new poll has revealed.

The poll conducted released on Sunday showed that the support rate of the government headed by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida stood at 29 per cent, down 7 percentage points from the 36 pe rcent in the previous survey in August, a record low since he took office in October 2021, reports Xinhua news agency.

A public support rating below 30 per cent is commonly viewed as a "danger zone" for the cabinet.

The approval rating of Japan's main ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) also dropped 6 percentage points from the previous poll to 23 per cent.

The sharp drop in the approval ratings for the Cabinet and the LDP is blamed partly on Japanese politicians' controversial links to the religious group of Unification Church.

Only 12 per cent of respondents said they "approve of" Kishida's response to the issue of Japanese politicians' ties to the Unification Church, far less than the 72 per cent who said they did not.

On September 8, the LDP said its in-house survey has found that 179, or nearly half of its Diet members, had some links with the church.

Since the survey was based on self-reporting, most of the respondents were not convinced.

As for a state funeral for former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, 62 per cent opposed it, up 9 percentage points from the previous survey, while 27 per cent were in favour.

The survey was jointly conducted by newspaper Mainichi Shimbun and the Social Survey Research Centre from September 17 to 18, through a combination of text messages on mobile phones and automated voice questionnaires on fixed-line phones.

A total of 642 valid responses were received from mobile phones and 422 valid responses from landlines.

The drop in the approval ratings was echoed by surveys conducted by several local media.

The latest Kyodo News survey showed on Sunday that the Cabinet's public approval rating dropped to 40.2 per cent, a new low since its launch last year.

Its latest disapproval rating in the weekend survey, a record 46.5 per cent, exceeded the approval rating for the first time since Kishida took office in October, according to Kyodo News.

Yoon’s approval rating edges up for 2nd consecutive week

Seoul, Sep 19 (IANS) South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol's approval rating increased for the second consecutive week due to in part of the government's efforts on improving the economy and people's livelihoods, a new poll showed on Monday.

In the poll of 2,015 voters conducted by Realmeter from September 13-16, 34.4 per cent positively assessed Yoon's handling of state affairs, up 1.8 percentage points from the previous poll, while 63.2 per cent gave a negative assessment, down 1.4 percentage points, reports Yonhap News Agency.

This marks the second consecutive week his approval rating rose in a Realmeter poll.

"Public support for Yoon appears to have become stable as he focused on bettering the economy and people's livelihoods while staying away from political issues," a senior analyst at Realmeter said.

The President's future approval rating could change according to results he brings on pending issues, including the bio and semiconductor industry, currency swap with the United States and forced labour issue with Japan, from his three-nation trip this week, the analyst added.

Yoon left for London on Sunday to attend the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, kicking off a three-nation trip that will include his first address to the UN General Assembly, and summits with US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

In terms of party favourability, Yoon's People Power Party garnered support of 38.3 per cent, up 3.1 percentage points from the previous week, and the main opposition Democratic Party received support of 46.2 per cent, down 2.2 percentage points over the same period.

19 killed in Nigeria road accident: Official

Abuja, Sep 19 (IANS) At least 19 people were killed and eight others seriously injured in a road accident involving three vehicles in Nigeria's capital city of Abuja, traffic police said.

The tragedy happened as two buses collided with a truck along the Yangoji-Gwagwalada road on the outskirts of Abuja on Sunday, said Dauda Biu, acting national head of the Federal Road Safety Corps, who briefed reporters during a visit to the site.

The three vehicles collided on motion and bursted into flames, Biu said, attributing the fatal accident to overspeed and wrongful overtaking which eventually resulted in loss of control, Xinhua news agency reported.

The identities of the victims were unknown, as they burned beyond recognition and could not be preserved, according to the official.

"The 19 corpses were trapped but extricated by rescue operatives," he explained, noting that the police had launched an investigation into the incident.

S.Korea reports new African swine fever case

Seoul, Sep 19 (IANS) South Korea will slaughter some 7,000 pigs to try to stem the spread of African swine fever (ASF) following a new outbreak at a local farm, the agriculture ministry said on Monday.

The animal disease broke out at a pig farm in Chuncheon, 85 km northeast of Seoul, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said, adding some 7,000 pigs at the farm will be culled as a preventive measure.

The government also issued a 24-hour standstill order on pig farms and related facilities in Gangwon Province through 2 a.m. Tuesday and plans to carry out an in-depth inspection into 43 adjacent farms, Yonhap news agency reported.

It also plans to conduct clinical tests on all of around 200 pig farms in the province, the ministry added.

It marked this year's third ASF case, with the previous case having taken place in August in the eastern county of Yanggu.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo instructed officials to fully implement quarantine steps in close cooperation with local governments to contain the spread of the virus, according to his office.

ASF does not affect humans but is deadly to pigs. There is currently no vaccine or cure for the disease.

The ministry said that the current ASF situation is not likely to affect the country's pork supply, as the number of pigs to be culled this time accounts for about 0.06 percent of the total pigs currently being raised in the country.

Iran ready for prisoners’ exchange with US: Spokesman

Tehran, Sep 19 (IANS) Iran renews readiness for prisoners' exchange with the US, said Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani.

"We have already announced our readiness to exchange prisoners, and we still have this readiness," Kanaani was quoted by the ISNA, Xinhua news agency reported.

"Negotiations have been conducted in different ways and both sides have made necessary agreements, and now it is the decision of the American government to implement this agreement or not," he said.

Kanaani also said that the issue of prisoners' exchange has nothing to do with the conclusion of the talks aiming at the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has said that the exchange of prisoners with the United States had been discussed on the sidelines of nuclear talks in Vienna.

10 IS militants killed in raids in Iraq

Baghdad, Sep 19 (IANS) Seven Islamic State (IS) militants and a member of government-backed paramilitary Hashd Shaabi forces were killed on Sunday in a clash in Iraq's northern province of Nineveh, the media office of Hashd Shaabi forces said in a statement.

Hashd Shaabi fighters clashed with IS militants hiding in a tunnel in the al-Hatra desert southwest of Mosul, capital of Nineveh Province, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the statement.

The clash resulted in the killing of seven IS militants inside the tunnel, the statement said, adding a Hashd Shaabi member was also killed and eight others wounded after two suicide bombers blew up their explosive belts in an attempt to storm the tunnel.

Meanwhile, Yahia Rasoul, spokesman of the commander-in-chief of the Iraqi forces, said in a statement that the army's helicopter gunships destroyed a vehicle and killed three IS militants aboard during reconnaissance and search operations in Nineveh.

Over the past months, Iraqi security forces have conducted operations against extremist militants to crack down on their intensified activities.

The security situation in Iraq has been improving since the defeat of the IS in 2017. However, its remnants have since melted into urban centers, deserts, and rugged areas, carrying out frequent guerilla attacks against security forces and civilians.

‘Hungary committed to keep its promises in order to access EU funds’

Budapest, Sep 19 (IANS) The Hungarian government is committed to fulfilling its promises made to the European Commission (EC) in order to gain access to billions of euros of European Union (EU) funds, Tibor Navracsics, Minister of Regional Development and Utilization of EU Funds, told a press conference on Sunday.

"The government has no intention of failing to fulfill the commitments it has made," Navracsics said, following the EC's earlier decision on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported.

Earlier on Sunday, the EC proposed suspending 7.5 billion euros in financing for Hungary, until the implementation of anti-corruption reforms from the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The Hungarian government is expected to inform the committee by November 19 about the implementation of the promised changes.

At the press conference, Navracsics explained that the negotiations phase of the conditionality procedure with the EC have been concluded, and the organization has accepted the anti-corruption commitments of the Hungarian government.

"This means that new aspects and new expectations cannot arise from the EC, now we have to execute what we have vowed to do," he told journalists.

"The commission has doubts about whether the Hungarian cabinet will implement its commitments, but it is absolutely certain that we will implement them, so I will not focus on the possible financial sanctions," he said.

Navracsics added that the EC would monitor closely the implementation of the Hungarian government's undertakings, in order to avoid a situation like the one that arose between Poland and the EC regarding the withdrawal of funds.

"So we will continue to consult with the commission in the future, I will fly out to Brussels on Wednesday for instance," he underlined.

The Hungarian government promised the setting up of an independent anti-corruption institution to monitor the use of EU funds as well as steps to make the legislative process more transparent.

"The government made a total of 17 promises, and some bills have already been submitted to the parliament, while others will follow next Monday and Friday," Navracsics said.

Earlier Sunday, Justice Minister Judit Varga reacted to the commission's proposal by saying that "we still have work to do" to end the dispute, while insisting that "we are moving in the right direction."

"We are working to ensure that the Hungarian people receive the resources they are entitled to!" Varga posted on her Facebook page.

Israel approves 6-country annual conference

Jerusalem, Sep 19 (IANS) Israel's cabinet has approved the establishment of an annual gathering of senior officials from the US and five Middle Eastern countries, namely Israel, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, Morocco and Egypt.

The decision "institutionalises" the work of the Negev Forum, a six-party meeting held in Sde Boker in southern Israel's Negev Desert in March 2022, said a statement issued by Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid's office.

The Negev Forum will act on the basis of six working multilateral groups in the fields of food security and water, energy, tourism, health, education and tolerance, and regional security, the office was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency reported.

Among the four Arab countries in the forum, the UAE, Bahrain and Morocco normalised ties with Israel in 2020, while Egypt was the first Arab country to sign a peace accord with Israel in 1979.
