Can psychosocial factors raise long Covid risk?

New York, April 2 (IANS) SARS-CoV-2 infection is not alone behind long Covid conditions, psychosocial factors such as low physical activity and loneliness may also contribute, according to a study led by an international team of researchers.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines post-Covid-19 condition (PCC) as the persistence of symptoms such as fatigue, dyspnoea, and what is commonly referred to as "brain fog" occurring three months or longer after infection with SARS-CoV-2.

The study, published in the JAMA Network Open, showed that the prevalence of long Covid conditions was equally high among people without a history of mild SARS-CoV-2 infection, suggesting contributions of other factors.

The prevalence of PCC six months after acute Covid was approximately 50 per cent, but was equally high in a control group of comparable SARS-CoV-2-negative individuals (47 per cent).

Acute Covid was not an independent risk factor for PCC, the researchers said, noting that low physical activity and loneliness were also associated with the outcome.

"These results suggest that factors often labelled as psychosocial should be considered risk factors for persistent symptoms," the researchers said.

However, "this does not imply that PCC is 'all in the mind', or that the condition has a homogeneous, psychological aetiology. Rather, there might be heterogeneous biological, psychological, and social factors engaged in triggering and maintaining the symptoms of the individual," they said.

For the study, researchers, including from Akershus University Hospital in Norway, University College London, UK; and University of Sydney in Australia, used a prospective cohort study involving 404 people who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 and 105 who tested negative.

The team evaluated the participants during the early convalescent stage and at six-month follow-up.

Study subjects underwent clinical exams, including pulmonary, cardiac, and blood tests to examine immunological and organ injury biomarkers.

Researchers also conducted cognitive functional tests.

The team didn't find any biomarkers specific to viral infection at six-month follow-up. The main risk factor for PCC was symptom severity at baseline.

Reduce screen time for autistic children: Experts

Lucknow, April 2 (IANS) Autistic children should be kept away from TV screens, tablets and mobile phones as far as possible since this exposure is said to aggravate symptoms.

Medical experts says that this flare-up of symptoms due to screen exposure is called 'virtual autism' and cases are on the rise in the post pandemic era, especially in children under the age of five.

Prof Vivek Agrawal, head of psychiatry department in the King George's Medical University (KGMU), said children below the age of five are spending six-ten hour watching screens.

"We are seeing five-six such cases in the OPD which used to be one-two earlier during pre-pandemic era. Luckily, it is reversible if identified in its early stages and corrective measures taken," said Prof Agarwal.

He said traits like social interaction, communication and behavioural challenges among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are getting flared up.

Renowned paediatric neurologist from Lucknow, Dr Rahul Bharat, said, today gadgets are used a lot in homes. Parents give these gadgets to kids during infancy, which is a critical time for brain development when children learn by observing others, exploring their surroundings and learning through free play.

"Since these ASD kids have strong visual memory and have limited interests, letting a child see screens for too long makes the situation worse," he said.

He also said the rise in virtual autism cases is being recorded all over the world in the post Covid phase.

"During the pandemic, parents gave gadgets to children and spending too much time in a virtual world is depriving a young child's growing brain of important stimulation. Hence, speech stuttering and affecting cognitive capacities got impacted," said Dr Rahul Bharat.

He cautioned parents about the dangers of exposing young children to four or more hours of screen use every day.

"Lack of communication among parents leads to issues affecting children. In most cases, aggressive behaviour and tantrums shown by children can be addressed. The first three-six months are very crucial for the child and so parents should be focused on their development," he added.

AI pilots’ bodies allege unilateral changes in service conditions

New Delhi, March 29 (IANS) Pilots' bodies have written to the Air India management on the issues surrounding 'unilateral changes in service conditions and policies', alleging that unilateral violations of their rights and service agreements are creating industrial unrest and shattering employee confidence.

In a letter addressed to Air India's chief human resources officer, Suresh Dutt Tripathi, Indian Pilots Guild (IPG) and Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA) have urged him to take immediate action in initiating talks to find a mutually beneficial solution that will benefit both the company and its employees.

The pilots' bodies have alleged that at the beginning of the transition period, it was understandable that the management required some time to understand the ground reality to chart solutions for existing and anticipated problems.

"But still, we are being fed the same noncommittal, biding-for-time excuses while rapid and regressive changes are being introduced unilaterally in our service/working conditions through organisational announcements and policies. The recent crew connect online event, like most of these interaction sessions, was a sham," said the letter written on March 28.

On March 22, an 'organisational announcement' was emailed to individual pilots announcing a forcible capping of privilege leave accumulation to 60 days as well as liquidation of any additional leave over and above. "For good measure, a new leave policy will be aannounced soon," the letter said.

Pilots' associations have said that leave quota, accumulation and encashment cannot be unilaterally changed by the management in the name of organisational announcement or policy with such nonchalance.

"No change can be made to our existing bilaterally-agreed service conditions without issuing a notice u/s 9A of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, and following the procedure specified there under," they said.

Pilots' bodies said that they have appealed on ethical grounds to follow the letter and spirit of the law and engage unions actively as is being done in other Tata companies.

"That appeal is clearly not working. It is our duty to inform you that all these unilateral violations of our rights and service agreements are creating industrial unrest and shattering employee confidence in the current management," they said.

New Delhi, March 29 (IANS) The Union government plans to implement almost 58 per cent of its borrowing for 2023-24 during the first half of the forthcoming fiscal, according to its borrowing programme for the above-mentioned period, finalised in consultation with the RBI.

Out of the gross market borrowing of Rs 15.43 lakh crore projected for 2023-24 in the Union Budget, Rs 8.88 lakh crore (or 57.55 per cent) is planned to be borrowed in first half of the fiscal.

The borrowing is scheduled to be completed in 26 weekly tranches of Rs 31,000-39,000 crore.

The borrowing will be spread under 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 30 and 40 year securities, official sources said.

The share of borrowing under different maturities will be: three-year (6.31 per cent), five-year (11.71 per cent), seven-year (10.25 per cent), 10 year (20.50 per cent), 14 year (17.57 per cent), 30 year (16.10 per cent), and 40 year (17.57 per cent).

The issuance of sovereign green bonds will be announced in the second half of 2023-24, they added.

The weekly borrowing through issuance of treasury bills in the first quarter of 2023-24 is expected to be Rs 32,000 crore with net borrowing of Rs 1.42 lakh crore during the quarter, against net borrowing of Rs 2.40 lakh crore in the first quarter of 2022-23.

There will be issuance of Rs 12,000 crore under 91 treasury bills, Rs 12,000 crore under 182 treasury bills, and Rs 8,000 crore under 364 treasury bills through each weekly auction to be conducted during the quarter.

Covid vax boosts immunity even in blood cancer patients: Study

Sydney, March 29 (IANS) Despite being severely low on immunity levels, blood cancer patients generate strong responses against SARS-CoV-2 after vaccination, on par with that of healthy individuals, according to a research.

Researchers from the University of Melbourne undertook the most comprehensive analysis of adaptive SARS-CoV-2 immunity to date in haematology patients of varying diseases and treatments across three doses of Covid-19 vaccination in comparison to healthy individuals.

The findings published in the journal Cell Reports Medicine shows that blood cancer patients highly benefit from receiving three doses of vaccination.

The vaccines boost their levels of T cells, the white blood cells that kill viral infected cells, irrespective of the patient's B-cell numbers and antibody response.

"It is important to really understand vaccine efficacy in this immuno-suppressed high-risk group of patients to help prevent severe SARS-CoV-2 infection," said Dr Oanh Nguyen, Senior Research Fellow at the varsity's Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute).

"This group is at high risk of viral infectious diseases, such as influenza and SARS-CoV-2, and yet they are not always included in pre-clinical trials that test vaccine efficacy," Nguyen said.

The team also looked at the characteristics of these T cells that are generated after vaccination, and "found that these signatures are very similar to healthy individuals that are either infected or vaccinated. These findings are really important and super exciting for cancer patients", Nguyen said.

According to Katherine Kedzierska, a Laboratory Head at Doherty Institute the study provides key insights for future immunisation strategies with vaccines such as influenza which predominantly induce B cell immune responses.

"What we have shown is that people with comorbidities that have a heavily impacted B cell immune arm, can have an mRNA vaccine to elicit T cells and give them that extra level of protection," Kedzierska said.

The study results are also important for clinicians working with blood cancer patients.

"Clinicians can be confident that it is safe and beneficial for their patients, who are heavily immunocompromised and vulnerable to severe Covid-19 infection, to receive vaccination against SARS-CoV-2. Regardless of their diseases and treatments, Covid-19 vaccination generates strong T cell immunity in this group," said the researchers.

Flu can raise your heart attack risk by 6 times: Study

London, March 29 (IANS) People suffering from flu could be at more than six times higher risk of heart attack a week after, than in the year before or after, a new study suggests.

The study, led by researchers from the University Medical Centre Utrecht in The Netherlands, said the results underline the importance of the flu vaccination programme, as well as awareness of heart attack symptoms among doctors treating patients with flu, the Independent reported.

"Our results endorse strategies to prevent influenza infection, including vaccination. They also advocate for a raised awareness among physicians and hospitalised flu patients for symptoms of heart attacks," lead author Dr Annemarijn de Boer, from the University was quoted as saying.

"While it isn't clear from our results if those with less severe flu are also at risk, it is prudent for them to be aware of the link," de Boer added.

The findings come amidst rising cases of flu in India, driven by the H3N2 virus.

For the study, the team analysed lab test results of 26,221 cases of influenza between 2008 and 2019, and compared them with death and hospital records.

About 401 patients had a heart attack in the year before or after a bout of flu -- some of them suffered more than one heart attack with the researchers noting 419 heart attacks in total.

Of the total heart attacks, 25 were in the first seven days after flu diagnosis, 217 within the year before diagnosis and 177 in the year after flu diagnosis - not including the first seven days, the report said.

About 35 per cent of patients who had a heart attack died, of any cause, within a year of being diagnosed with flu.

The findings will also be to the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in Copenhagen in April.

According to a previous study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, flu virus plays a role in rupturing plaque, causing heart attacks. Annual flu shots, however, were found to reduce the risk.

India’s EndTB 2025 goal ambitious, herculean task, but achievable: ExpertS

    By Rachel V. Thomas
New Delhi, March 24 (IANS) India's END tuberculosis (TB) programme, that is committed to making India Tuberculosis-free by 2025, five years ahead of the global target of 2030, is an ambitious goal, a herculean task, but certainly achievable, said experts on World TB day.

World Tuberculosis Day is observed every year on March 24. "Yes! We can end TB!" is the theme for this year, and urges leaders from around the world to act to stop the TB epidemic.A

India has about 3.1 million tuberculosis patients and approximately 2,000 patients are diagnosed with TB yearly.

The Pradhan Mantri's TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan "is a very ambitious goal" and India is facing a "herculean task" to keep up with its commitment, Dr Vishal Rao, Fellow at Royal Society of Medicine (London), and Director at head neck surgical oncology department at HealthCare Global Cancer Centre, told IANS.

"For TB to be eliminated, there should be less than one case for every 1 million in the country. Today, at the current rate, we are seeing a decline in the incidence of TB of 1.5 per cent, which needs to accelerate to more than 15 per cent each year. So, we have a very daunting task with us at hand, and with only two years left the decline rate of TB cases needs to go much higher," said Rao, who is also part of a consultative group to the Principal Scientific Advisor to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"In my opinion, Prime Minister Modi's call to END TB by 2025 is outstanding. And I think it is achievable. One is the fact that we already see a lot of cases being notified from India. And a lot of push to work on prevention, which for sure will lead to a decrease in incidence and we already have noticed that," Dr. Lucica Ditiu, Executive Director, Stop TB Partnership, told IANS.

She said that India has shown a lot of acepolitical commitment" which has resulted in providing nutritional support to people with TB, updated data to see how many people with the disease were found, diagnosed and treated up till yesterday.

One of the major challenges ahead of India is that more than half of the TB cases do not get detected, Rao said.

For this, he suggested strengthening peripheral Primary Health Centre (PHC) programmes focusing on detecting TB and stronger mass media campaigns that would raise awareness, and allocate more funds to the National TB Elimination Programme for improved manpower, awareness campaigns, counselling, and detection.A

Another challenge is high tobacco usage in the country, which is an omnipresent yet preventable risk.

More than 20 per cent of global TB cases and 40 per cent of Indian cases can be attributed to tobacco usage.

Rao suggested implementing stringent policies to counter the tobacco industry, reduce the prevalence of tobacco consumption especially, among the youth; protect lung health by strengthening tobacco control programmes, especially smoke-free policies.

He also stressed the need to promote healthy lifestyle practices, and make the youth aware of the harmful effects of tobacco; and adopting innovative measures, increased action, and multi-sector collaborations to control tobacco use and fight TB.

"I think India will achieve the goal to end TB" because of its approach of "going at a very granular and peripheral level", Ditiu said.

However, access should be secured for every single person. A decentralised approach is needed to ensure access to everyone even at the village level, she suggested.

The country also needs to "maintain the political pressure, and then the financial resources to do this because the investments needed for this will be very huge and should be sustained".

"It's not that you have a jump in 2024. And then you are relaxed. Basically, we have two more years for India to push on this up to the end of 2025. So let's hope that the political commitment and the financial resources will come," Ditiu said.

The godman has issued a two-page form for this.

Karauli Baba's ashram wants to grant the accreditation similar to the government cards issued to journalists for coverage of the President and Prime Minister.

The self-styled godman had landed in a soup after Noida-based doctor Siddharth filed a complaint accusing him and his supporters of assaulting him, on Monday.

A video of the February 22, 2023 showing interaction between the doctor and Baba has also gone viral since the registration of the FIR.

DCP South Salman Taj Patil said: "Efforts are also being made to procure the CCTV footage of the day of the incident from the ashram. We will scan the CCTV footage to ascertain the accusations. Further action will be taken on the basis of the evidence.

"We will make the medical report of the complainant a part of the case. If the medical report is private, then legal opinion will be taken and will be included in the investigation. Statements of the doctor and his family will be recorded. If he does not come to Kanpur, the investigators will go to Noida to record his statement. Action will be taken further on the basis of the facts which come to the fore," he added.

HireMee launches AI employability test for graduates in tough job market

New Delhi, March 24 (IANS) Amid growing layoffs especially in the tech industry, talent acquisition and talent management platform HireMee on Friday announced an employability test for graduates to gain an edge with prospective employers.

The HireMee's 100-minute online test is a proven diagnostic assessment to calibrate employability skills of youth.

Engineering graduates of the 2023 batch and earlier can take the test from the comfort of their home or college on a computer or a mobile phone through a downloadable app.

The employability test, tailored for a test taker's area of engineering specialisation, is backed by artificial intelligence (AI) to check impersonation and to prevent test takers seeking external help.

"The test is a great opportunity for job aspirants to get differentiated based on their employability scores and stand out when shared with hundreds of employers who honour the HireMee scores," said Venkatraman Umakanth, Senior Vice President and Head, HireMee.

The HireMee employability score generated after a scientific assessment on nine different parameters -- including verbal, logic, and quantitative aptitude, personality traits, communication, computer skills, and core technical competencies.

After completing the assessment, offered at no cost, the test takers can upload three 20-second videos to cover "About Me", "My Skills" and "Area of Interest" that demonstrate a candidate's aspirations and communication skills.

A hiring company's recruiting teams can filter candidates with scorecards matching their requirements and video profiles.

"The scientifically comprehensive assessment helps companies to identify the most suitable candidates based on their specified psychometric or personality cut off scores and put them through the next steps of recruitment process thereby reducing their recruitment cycle time and associated cost," Venkatraman added.

Companies such as BOSCH, Essar Oil & Gas, IndiaMART, Instakart, MRF, PlanetSpark and Vee Technologies have partnered with HireMee to assess engineering graduates before hiring them for the company's operations.

In addition, nearly 500 companies use the HireMee platform for talent acquisition.
