Kolkata, Aug 25 (IANS) The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday announced the formation of a four‑member committee to oversee organisational preparations for the forthcoming Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) polls scheduled by the end of this year.
Union Minister of State for Education and former state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar will head the committee. State vice‑president Raju Bandopadhyay has been made co‑in‑charge. Party legislator and West Bengal Commerce & Industries Minister Tapas Roy is the convener, while Ritesh Tiwari, legislator from Cossipore‑Belgachia constituency in North Kolkata, is the co‑convener.
Alongside KMC, polls for the Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC) are also scheduled at the end of this year.
The BJP announced a two‑member committee for HMC preparations, with former national secretary and Rajya Sabha member Rahul Sinha as in‑charge and legislator Sanjay Singh as co‑in‑charge.
The decision was taken at a high‑level meeting at the BJP’s state headquarters in Salt Lake, chaired by national general secretary and central observer for West Bengal Sunil Bansal.
State general secretary (organisation) Amitabh Chakraborty and Majumdar represented the state leadership, while BJP legislators from the Kolkata area also attended.
This year’s KMC and HMC polls will be conducted after delimitation of wards. Under the proposed delimitation, the number of wards in KMC will increase from 144 to 209, while HMC wards will rise from 50 to 68.
