Kolkata, Aug 20 (IANS) The Calcutta High Court on Thursday directed the bank where the Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee maintains his account to send an employee to his residence to get his signatures on the KYC (Know Your Customer) documents.
The direction came after the bank authorities informed the single-judge bench of Justice Krishna Rao that since debit restrictions have already been imposed on the said bank account, online KYC updating will not be possible.
In fact, the bank authorities proposed sending a bank employee to the residence of the Diamond Harbour MP to get his signatures on the KYC documents and thus complete the process of offline KYC update.
The bank also updated the court about the documents that Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of the former West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, will have to submit for the KYC update.
Abhishek Banerjee’s counsel argued that his client was not supposed to submit the documents at this moment since the term of the current KYC will end only in December this year and also claimed that the bank authorities should first clarify the reasons for imposing debit restrictions on his bank account and blocking his credit cards.
Thereafter, Justice Rao ruled that the Diamond Harbour MP should submit the necessary documents, and as proposed by the bank authorities, one employee of the bank will go to his residence to get his signatures on the KYC documents.
The bench also ruled that after the process of offline KYC updating is completed, the court will look into the matter of bank account freezing.
Abhishek Banerjee’s counsel then informed the court that his client would be going abroad next week for eye treatment. The next hearing in the case will be on August 24.
The matter was first heard earlier on Thursday when the court questioned why the bank was not going for an online KYC update and asked the bank authorities to clarify their stand in the matter.
In the second half, the matter was heard again, and finally Justice Rao accepted the bank’s proposal for sending a bank employee to Abhishek’s residence to get his signatures.
