Australia: One child killed in stabbing incident in Sydney, three critically injured

Sydney, Sep 20 (IANS) A child has died, and two other children and a woman were hospitalised with critical injuries after a fatal stabbing incident in the west of Sydney on Sunday.

Police said in a statement that emergency services were called to reports of three children and a woman suffering from stab wounds in a vehicle in the small town of Valley Heights, 60 km west of central Sydney, around 12:45 PM on Sunday.

Members of the public performed first aid before the arrival of ambulance paramedics, but one of the children died at the scene, Xinhua News Agency reported.

The other two children and the woman were all taken to hospital in critical condition.

Police said that all three children are believed to be under five years of age and the woman is in her 40s.

A crime scene has been established, and police said they are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.

On August 25, a man was hospitalised with critical injuries after he was stabbed by a group of people who tried to break into his home in the Australian state of Queensland.

The Queensland Police Service said that a group of armed people attempted to break into a property in Victoria Point, 30 km east of Brisbane, around 1:30 am (local time) on August 25 when they were confronted by a resident.

The resident, a 46-year-old man, was stabbed several times before the group fled the scene.

He was subsequently taken to hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Police said investigations are underway to determine whether the attack was targeted and asked anyone with information or footage to come forward.

On August 20, a teenage boy was hospitalised after he was stabbed at a western Sydney school.

Police said that emergency services were called to report that a 14-year-old boy had been injured at a school in Granville, 18 km west of central Sydney.

Officers arrived and were told that the boy suffered a cut to his abdomen. He was treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics before being taken to the hospital in a stable condition.

A second 14-year-old boy was subsequently arrested, and a knife was seized for examination.
