Guwahati, Oct 13 (IANS) The Assam government has decided to reserve 12 per cent of posts across 11 uniformed service categories for former Agniveers domiciled in the state, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday.
Sharing the decision on social media platform X, CM Sarma said the state government was committed to supporting former Agniveers and creating fresh opportunities for them after their service in the armed forces.
“Assam stands with its Agniveers,” the Chief Minister said in his X post, highlighting the state government’s decision to earmark 12 per cent of posts in 11 uniformed categories for former Agniveers who are domiciled in Assam.
Emphasising their contribution to the country, CM Sarma said the former Agniveers had served India with pride and that the state government now had a responsibility to help shape their future by providing opportunities to continue serving society in their home state.
“They (former Agniveers) have served India with pride. Now, the responsibility to shape their future at home and provide new opportunities for service is ours,” he added.
The announcement is aimed at facilitating the transition of former Agniveers from military service to employment opportunities in state-level uniformed services.
The reservation is specifically intended for former Agniveers domiciled in Assam, according to the Chief Minister’s statement.
The move is significant for personnel recruited under the Agnipath scheme, which provides for a four-year tenure in the armed forces.
Under the scheme, up to 25 per cent of a batch may be retained for regular service, subject to organisational requirements and selection, while the remaining personnel return to civilian life.
Several states have announced or considered employment preferences for former Agniveers in police and other uniformed services to support their rehabilitation after completing their military tenure.
Assam’s decision seeks to provide eligible former personnel with an additional avenue for public employment while drawing on the discipline, training and experience acquired during their military service.
Further details regarding the 11 uniformed categories covered by the reservation, eligibility conditions and the implementation schedule were not immediately available.
The state government’s announcement comes amid continuing discussions over employment opportunities and post-service rehabilitation for Agniveers across the country.
