Delhi Speaker asks Kamla Nehru College students to actively participate in democracy

New Delhi, Oct 5 (IANS) Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta said on Monday that women must come forward to become active participants in democracy and contribute meaningfully to the making of Viksit Bharat.

Interacting with students of Kamla Nehru College, University of Delhi, who visited the Assembly under the Youth Outreach Programme, Gupta said the strength of our democracy lies in the active participation of every section of society, and young women have a particularly important role in shaping the India of 2047.

Gupta emphasised that the participation of women in democracy should not remain limited to being voters but must extend to public leadership, policy-making, legislative debates and decision-making.

He said that India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat @2047 requires the equal participation, talent and leadership of its young women.

The visit provided the students an opportunity to experience the functioning of a democratic institution beyond the classroom and to develop a closer understanding of the Constitution, legislative processes and the role of elected representatives, said an official statement.

The students explored the historic Assembly complex and were introduced to its rich democratic and parliamentary legacy.

During their interaction with the Speaker, the students engaged in an open and insightful discussion on democracy, constitutional values, legislative functioning, women’s participation in public life and the role of youth in nation-building.

The students enthusiastically participated in the interaction and raised questions on various aspects of democratic governance and the functioning of the House, the statement said.

The Speaker encouraged the students to remain curious about public affairs and understand both their constitutional rights and civic responsibilities.

He said that young people must actively engage with democratic institutions and develop the ability to understand issues through dialogue, reasoned debate and constitutional values.

As part of the visit, the students explored the historic heritage of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, gaining insights into the building’s association with India’s parliamentary history and the important personalities and events connected with its legacy.

They were also introduced to the Assembly’s heritage initiatives and the Coffee Table Book “Ek Shatabdi Yatra”, which documents its rich historical journey.

The students visited the main Assembly Chamber, giving them a first-hand opportunity to see the setting in which legislative debates and proceedings take place.

Through the guided visit and documentaries, they gained a broader perspective on the Assembly’s historical significance, democratic traditions and contemporary functioning.

Students of DPS School, Chattarpur, MP also visited the Delhi Assembly under this programme.

The Youth Outreach Programme continues to provide young citizens with opportunities to interact directly with democratic institutions and understand the functioning of the legislature.

The visit by the students of Kamla Nehru College further strengthened this dialogue between the younger generation and the institutions of democracy, encouraging them to see themselves not merely as observers but as active stakeholders in India’s democratic journey.
