Mangaluru: A delegation representing the Bandari community in Dakshina Kannada has urged the state government to sanction 5-6 acres of government land for setting up a community hall, educational institutions and a student hostel.
The delegation submitted a memorandum to urban development minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah during a meeting of OBC leaders at Tulu Bhavan here on September 17.
Manoraj Rajiv, former vice-president of the Mangaluru Bar Association and chairman of the Legal Cell of the Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee, briefed the minister on the social, educational, economic and political status of the Bandari community.
The delegation said the community had not been allotted government land so far for establishing permanent facilities. It sought the proposed land primarily to create infrastructure that could support the educational and social development of present and future generations.
The proposed community facilities would include a community hall, educational institutions and a hostel for students, the memorandum said.
Siddaramaiah assured the delegation that he would examine the demand and take necessary action. He also said the matter would be brought to the attention of Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar for further discussion, according to the delegation.
KPCC general secretary Rakshit Shivaram, who was present at the meeting, also assured the delegation that he would pursue the demand with the concerned officials and extend necessary cooperation.
Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) chairperson Baby Kundar, Usha Manoraj, Amarnath Bandari, Shishir Bandari, Roshni Shishir Bandari, Nagaraj Bandari and others were present.
