SSB jawan kills himself with service rifle in Bhopal

Bhopal, Aug 19 (IANS) A 35-year-old Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) jawan allegedly died by suicide after shooting himself with his service rifle while on duty at a CSD Camp Depot in Bhopal, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place in the Kamla Nagar police station area, following which police reached the spot and sent the body to Hamidia Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Kamla Nagar police station SHO, Nirupama Pandey, said the deceased, identified as Sandeep Kharmate, was posted on duty at the depot when he allegedly shot himself with his service weapon.

“The police have registered a case regarding the unnatural death and an investigation is underway. The body has been sent for post-mortem,” Pandey told IANS.

According to police, Kharmate’s wife was informed by departmental officials about his death around 4 a.m. on Wednesday. She told police that she had last spoken to her husband around 10 p.m. on Tuesday night. During the conversation, he had told her that he was on duty. There was no communication between them after that, police said.

A suicide note written in Marathi was recovered from the spot, police said. The note has been sent for translation to ascertain its contents.

“The preliminary details available from the note indicate that he apologised to his wife and mentioned personal reasons for taking the extreme step. The exact circumstances will be known after the note is completely translated,” Pandey said.

Police said detailed statements of the deceased man’s family members have not yet been recorded.

His colleagues and departmental officials are also being questioned as part of the investigation.

The police are examining evidence collected from the scene and are trying to establish the circumstances that led to the jawan’s death.

Police said the exact reason behind the suicide would become clear only after the translation of the note, examination of the evidence and recording of statements of family members and colleagues.
