Former IB Special Director Anurag Kumar takes charge as Delhi Police Commissioner (Ld)

New Delhi, July 17 (IANS) Former Intelligence Bureau (IB) Special Director Anurag Kumar on Friday took charge as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police.

Outgoing Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha formally handed over the ceremonial baton to Kumar at the Delhi Police Headquarters in New Delhi.

A 1994-batch IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre, Anurag Kumar succeeds Golcha, a 1992-batch officer who assumed charge as Delhi Police Commissioner in August last year.

Although Golcha’s tenure was scheduled to continue until April 2027, the government directed him to report to the office of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.

Kumar’s return to his parent AGMUT cadre was approved on Thursday by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Following his repatriation from the Intelligence Bureau, the ACC cleared his appointment as Delhi Police Commissioner.

“With the approval of the Competent Authority, Anurag Kumar, IPS (AGMUT:1994), is hereby appointed as Commissioner of Police, Delhi, with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders,” an official order stated.

With nearly 32 years of experience in policing, administration and intelligence operations, Kumar brings extensive expertise in internal security and law enforcement to one of the country’s most demanding policing assignments.

During his tenure in the Intelligence Bureau, India’s premier domestic intelligence agency, he handled several critical portfolios related to national security, counter-terrorism strategy, intelligence gathering and analysis, and other sensitive security matters.

An engineering graduate, Kumar has been recognised for his distinguished service with some of the highest honours in policing. He was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016 for his exceptional contributions to the force.

As Delhi Police Commissioner, Kumar will oversee security and law-and-order management in the national capital, which houses key constitutional and administrative institutions, including Parliament, Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Prime Minister’s Office, the Supreme Court, and numerous foreign embassies.
